If not, then they won't know what to do with the thing in their hand. (Hence the hoo-hah - my baby couldn't sit and was not picking up...how can she chew a toastie soldier...I don't think she would never have learned to chew either...I mean, there must be adults out there whose mums didn't give them finger food between 6-9 months and they don't still have there dinner Liquidized do they:
"Urm, yes, my wife will have the Waldorf salad, and I'll have the steak Dianne....what's that...oh yes, erm, rare please. And also liquidized to a soft consistency so that I can carefully spoon it into my open mouth. I never learned to chew" Perleeeaaassse!
Rant over, sorry bout that, but I ask you, as if we don't worry enough!
they don't need teeth for toast. My nephew had no teeth at all before his first birthday, but he "gummed" away at almost anything he got given, no matter how crunchy/chewy/soft it was. Babys gums are meant for mushing up food, and once it's been soggied by the copious saliva they produce, they can happily swallow it down. If Jnr can hold it and shows interest in putting it in his mouth, give it a go. Some babies are prone to choking on bits of food, but others (like mine) will have a go at most things and show no signs of being unable to cope with lumps.
I started my little one on toast fingers a couple of weeks ago (about 7 1/2 months) and he's been fine with them but I never leave him alone while eating it just in case.
Be warned though: you will never again be able to eat toast yourself without a baby tugging on your leg or just taking it off your plate like mine does!

my babe also has no teeth but seems quite capable of sucking the filling off a bourbon cream and then throwing the other bit to the dog (and to think she had all those brain scans to rule any damage out!) She eats toast fine, in fact it is her favourite food. But mainly she still just likes puddings. She has seen the dietician re some food problems (allergies mainly) and the dietician is suspicious that she is just naughty. She is 9 months old, but already can suck the fromage frais off the chicken casserole and spit the rest out!
I wouldn't leave her alone either. Obviously, if I thought I could leave any of my five alone even for a second and have the time to eat a piece of marmite toast on my own then I would. But I have the problem that at least 2 sometimes 3 follow me anyway, so I might as well stay and witness the carnage.
I prefer marmite too. I have, after several muggings, now started to spread my toast so thickly with marmite (frankly if you can see any toast, there isn't enough marmite and it's just yummy) that they kids don't bother with it, they do that whole stinging tongue face thing. I also drink my tea black now for the same reason. It makes it kid proof. Now I have my own snacks and my own beverages back. Kids now steal my husbands. ha ha-de-ha ha! Bout time, it's been happening to me for 10 years!
