For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.rice cakes (you get great low salt ones), peeled apple slices as noted above (keep them in the freezer if your baby is teething - they work wonders on sore gums), chunks of any fruit really (peach, mango and pear are good), pasta is a good choice too as mycatis says, nice and easy to hold and easy to add a million different sauces to. Mashed up avocado and banana on toast, breadsticks/cheesesticks, pretty much any kind of bread, oven baked chunks of sweet potato, babybel or similar small cheese portion, dried apricots. Pretty much anything can be finger food to a wee one, just depends how much mess you are willing to deal with. My wee guy used to insist that yoghurt was a finger food, so spent much of his weaning months wearing it!!
As for the choking, well if your baby copes okay with toast, they should be fine with other things. Just stay close by and keep an eye out. Also, don't be put off by thinking Jnr won't cope if he/she doesn't have many teeth. They can "gum" through pretty much anything, especially with the massive amounts of saliva that wee people produce. Have fun!
My nine month old has just started on finger foods and he'll eat anything! Eggy bread, cheese on toast, steamed sticks of carrot or parsnip, steamed fruit sticks like apple or pear are all favourites. There are some great recipes in Annabel Karmel's cookbook for baby and toddlers - you should be able to get it from your library but it's a worthwhile investment as it gives recipes for children of all ages, and a lot are suitable for the whole family.
