Getting Children Reading

My daughter is 8 and dislikes reading which is a pain to me because I love it so much!
I need to get her interested in books. She has a vision problem, so reading IS a struggle for her, but she does like stories.
She loves a bed time story (although I think it's probably the quiet snuggle time she likes best rather than the actual book), but does not appear to like chapter books, but the picture books are all a bit young for her. Is there any "in between" type books? so you don't have to keep concentration for the whole book over several weeks, but isn't all over in 5 minutes?

My Granddaughter was the same, she's autistic but found her love for books eventually through her passion for art.

What about collections of short stories. There are quite a few on Amazon like this one...

What about short stories? 15 minute tales and the like. If you have a reader there are many available free online.

Also, to encourage her to read herself why not allow her to choose an age-appropriate comic next time you're out shopping? And once the libraries reopen let her have her own ticket and choose some books.

Thanks for the ideas. She was leant a kindle by school, which in my mind was ideal because she didn't need to use her magnifying glass, but she found it boring as she also likes to look at the pictures (even just line drawings) in books so it went back practically unused.

what about the horrible history books they are quite funny as well as informative x

would a tablet be affordable? you can have kindle on it and you can tap on the pictures to enlarge them.

we have a tablet. problem being I don't want her to have access to a tablet in her room (which is where I envisage her reading)

You may be able to set restrictions on the tablet.

can I ask, what problem does your daughter have with her sight? Does she have prescription glasses? Also, why does she seem to need a magnifying glass?

bedknobs can I ask why you don't want her to have a tablet in her room? its easy enough to limit internet use.

Even a comic would be useful, would be a start

Comics, and non fiction things she is interested in, dinosaurs, wildlife, foreign places and people there are books available for all levels and most have small amounts of text relative to pictures

thanks all. She is virtually blind in one eye. She does not wear glasses as no glasses would help. it causes problems with stereoscopic vision
