Little one has had his first party invitation from one of his new class mates for mid-October.

I am stuck what to get as a present. I don't want to get something that's rubbish and find all the other girls and boys have given something better, nor do I want to appear ostentatious or make anyone feel awkward or appear as if I'm trying to outdo others.

Who knew such decisions could be so crucial to my son's social standing? ;)

Joking aside, any ideas, including a sensible budget, would be hugely appreciated.

Thanking you.

on e bay, I found some Etch a Sketch toys, from as little as 4.50 upwards, obviously you want a new one, so have a look -
i loved them when i was young.

Thanks, Emmie, I'll have a look.
colouring sets are always welcome, dressing up costumes too. Kids love to be a cowboy, pirate, etc
Apart from wanting to say "ha ha", that's what happens when you breed

Kites are good fun, my kids and their friends loved them.

Cheap or expensive or somewhere in between.

Also gives parents a reason to play with their kids coz what grown-up doesn't like flying a kite and showing off their skills.
also Halloween is coming soon, perhaps something to do with that.
Morning all, how about good old Lego? Loads of kits to choose from.
lego is a good choice.

Yes, what boy doesn't love Lego.

I've got a mobile number to RSVP to, should I ask if there's anything the little boy wants?
yes do phone...
Lego is awesome, until you tread on an errant piece in the middle of the night.
Then it becomes a device of torture!!

Don't by lego, every parent inflicts that upon themselves.
as long as they keep it in the childs bedroom and remember to wear slippers.

I think lego is an excellent idea but most boys have a lego collection by the time they're five so it's getting something he hasn't already got.

etch a sketch is fun, drawing and being able to erase it and start again...
Lego is so yesterday, meccano is going the same way, alas.

Something different is required to make a statement, without be ostentatious.
Our 4 year old friend loved a small gift I gave him. It was a rubbery gecko that changed colour when you put it in water. Not expensive and didn’t need to last long.
At that age they will have something they are obsessed with, usually a tv programme, ask the mum and find something that relates to that. Or a bug Hunter kit, I have given those with great success,

Lego is not "so yesterday" my grandson loves it and has a huge collection. Can you ask the child's mum for ideas. It would get you a 'friend' at the school gate too.
