has anyone got good tips for a smooth transition from breastfeeding to drinking out of a mug? my son is 9mnths and drinks milk from a mug during the day but has a boobfeed before bed. I'd like him to have this last feed from his mug as well, but at bedtime if I put the mug anywhere near him he'll have a fit and start crying and wrigling away. I've tried putting up with it and insisting on the mug, but I haven't got the heart and always give him boob in the end. so, has anyone got any sneeky tricks I could try or is it just about not giving in?

i have always found that its just about not giving in. he knows he will get his own way so why should he drink out of the mug he just has to scream for a few more minutes to get boob.

try breastfeeding him until he is satisfied and then try and offer the mug after. he might take a small feed from the mug because he wont be so stressed out about not getting boob. if you keep doing this and making the breastfeed shorter each time and he takes more from the mug then i am sure he will be off the boob in no time. have you tried a bottle last thing at night instead of a mug ?

if all else fails just dont give in it will take a week maximum trust me !!!

Well done on the breastfeeding for so long. Why would you want to give up now? If your little one enjoys a little comfort at bedtime why do you want to take it away? And presumably you enjoy it as well as you have been doing it for 9 months.

That said you should probably ask some-one else to offer him the mug. He probably wont take it from you when he knows your boobs and a nice warm cuddle are so close by .

Best of luck
