Excessive night sweats and shaking
My husband is a 49 year old male, diagnosed with Diabetes and high blood pressure just over a year ago. Otherwise, he's in good health. He is self employed in a high stress occupation; we own a photo/lab portrait studio that also involves his father and sister. Currently, there are no other employees other than who i've mentioned.
The sweating at night has become VERY serious. He will change clothes *at least* 4-5 times a night due to being so wet. He rarely sleeps more than 3 hours straight, then has to get up and change clothes which breaks his sleep cycle. About 10 years ago, he was involved in an automobile accident and had to have a very serious, complicated back surgery. This has left him with chronic pain and other issues. Due to this, he has been on heavy narcotics to help with the pain. Recently, he went off the main pain management drug (methadone) and is now currently taking 40 mg of hydrocodone a day. It helps to some degree, but it is by no means "managing" his pain.
He's also developed extreme shaking. His GP has tested him for hyperthyroidism and nothing has shown up. There is a family history of thyroid disease in his family; both his mother and sister had to have their thyroid radiated and now take sythroid.
I'm really stumped as to what could be causing the extreme sweats and shaking. He's had the usual testing by his doctor, but to no avail as far as a solution. He's made another appointment to see his GP this Thursday to discuss this and see if something more can be done as far as testing.
If anyone has ANY suggestions/ideas... please let me know. This is dramatically affecting his quality of life and we must find out the cause of these problems.
Thank you in advance....

This sweating and shaking problem started long before even starting the methadone, anyway. The past 6 months have gotten considerably worse and we're grasping at straws to find an answer to what the cause is. I'm currently trying to get him to see an endocrynologist and do a complete work-up. Getting a man to go to the doctor is worse than pulling teeth, too!
Thanks for your suggestion, but like I said, he's past the withdrawl time for the drug.
Methadone Withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:
sneezing
yawning
tearing of eyes
runny nose
excessive perspiration
fever
dilated pupils
abdominal cramps
nausea
body aches
tremors
irritability
Like I said in my last reply, he's past the time where withdrawls would be affecting him. He had been on the drug for quite a while ( a year maybe) then stopped taking it on his own. A recent return visit to his pain managment doc was pretty much a 'you take this methadone or we're done with you' type visit. He chose not to take the drug. So, he's been off of it completely since December of last year - more than enough time for the withdrawls to go away.
Yes, he does test his sugar regularly and according to his doc, is under control. I'm wondering if maybe the meds he's taking for the diabetes or high BP might be causing this. Something has to be done, and soon, or he's going to float away from all the sweat! I'm also extremely concerned about the shaking. It's typical of thryroid problems but his doctor is telling him none of the testing is showing a problem.
This is frustrating, to say the least.
