mildew

My daughter is expecting her second baby in October. Yesterday she took the pram out of the garage where it has been stored since she started to use the smaller buggy for her toddler. The problem is that the nest part where a tiny new-born lies has got some mildew on the fleece. If my memory serves me right, this can be dangerous for a small pair of lungs to breath in. I know you can try and wash the fabric in a mild bleach solution, but how many of you would ditch the whole thing and buy new?

i would try cleaning it, or possibly removing it, you could remove the fabric on my sons pram, if i couldnt get it off then i am afraid i would have to advise you to buy a new one!

As it is so tough to see a wee one suffer, and treat them for illness, I would just bin it and get a new one. Not worth the sleepless nights, it's a trying enough time without adding to your worries.

there is no way that i would use a second hand pram even if its one from your own previous child. if second hand matressess are dangerous then surely the fabric on prams are too? I would buy a new one.

I would probably buy a new one, but then again, if you had to wash it wash it with a product called "Mildew remover" available from tesco is a spray gun bottle and it's bright green. I believe it's made by dettol, could be wrong there though, then wash it a couple of times with a regular washing powder and tumble dry with a comfort tumble sheet to make it nice and soft etc...

|I would also clean though whole pram with mildew remover (color check first though) as the spores spread like wildfire. I would definately take off all the fabric (which you may have to unscrew) and wash that and then wash as normal also.

It's a shame to throw away and buy new if you don't have to.

P.S I used the mildew remover on my buggy as I took it out the shed after the winter and it had a little on it and the colour stayed fine and the mildew went in a couple of minutes....It worked a treat and saved me the cost of a whole new pushchair.

you can use a second hand pram, its mattresses and car seats that you cant, i would have used my sons pram if i didnt have a seven year gap as the fabric on the pram was fine until i sold it 3 years ago!

P.S also forgot to suggest that you give the whole thing a good burst of sunlight and lots of airing too after the purification process.

what size would the mattress be? I'm opening a shop on ebay. and baby buggies, mattresses, cots, moniters, highchairs, i would c if i could do it at a discount?

Thanks for your answers everyone. I'll show them to my daughter and I think I'll look for the product that mimififi mentions, that sounds great.

mnko, it isn't the mattress, it's the tiny "nest" part of the pram that you can lift out and carry a very small baby in, they only stay in it for a little while, then you remove it altogether and they lie on the main base when they get bigger.

I think it depends on the type of mildew. If it is green, then it is difficult to get rid off. If it is a white/grey then it will wash off. I took a suitcase from the loft and it was covered in it. I had only used it once. Put it in the bath and gave it a good scrub, dried it outside and it has never come back. The white/grey mould doesn't smell of mould.
