Desperately looking for a teenage book which meets criteria!

Hello,
I am a 15 year old and am desperately looking for a teenage/young adult book that has a developing romance in it. Yes i am into cleashaes, but i dont want the book to have a romantic theme whatsoever, preferably an adventure theme or something of that type but i would also really like there to be a developing romance in it aswell for instance, i stroy line i like most is the guy and girl hate each other at first but then gradually fall for each other. Does anyone have any suggestions because the only teenage books with romances are really slushy, silly diary books and im not interested in that!

I think the problem you'll find is that most stories will be told from the perspective of either that guy or girl so despite making out they hate each other, they probably actually really, really like that person anyways. At least thats how it was for me when I was a tennager. I have a 22 year old mate who still does it now.

Some of the old Mills and Boon books ran on these themes. I am talking some 20 years ago, so maybe a trip to some charity shops would help.

Have you read His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman? That is a great fantasy adventure story and there is eventually a beautiful romance between the 2 major characters.

Or try Mills & Boon. I read loads when I was your age and they are always pretty much boy meets girl, boy and girl hate each other , they realise that there has been a huge misunderstanding and declare their love.

How about Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy? It's in no way an adventure but it's very good and not slushy at all.

Michelle Paver's 'Chronicles of Ancient Darkness' books are shaping up well - 'Wolf Brother', 'Spirit Walker' and 'Soul Eater'. They're set thousands of years ago.

Helena Pielichaty's 'Never Ever' is a modern girl hates boy story, but not sure whether you'd find it too much like the stuff you don't like. On the other hand, it's rather more than the chatty Georgia Nicholson/Princess Diaries type of thing. It tackles things like underage sex and drugs, but does it lightly. Pete Johnson also writes in a similar vein.

You might also like some of Kevin Brooks' work. It's more thriller than romance, and quite gritty. The boy/girl characters don't necessarily hate each other so much as just behave indifferently towards each other until one or the other characters realises the 'L' word has crept in. 'Lucas' and 'Candy' both have romantic elements, and I guarantee they will leave you in tears at the end, especially 'Lucas'.

try some of virginia andrew's books.. they usually in come in four or five series books but it might be what u are looking for. they all seem to have the same story line but with a few twists, poor meets rich, falls in love, death and why all this happens. i have all her books and i cant read a book unless it grips in the the first couple of pages. hope this helps.

Doesn't really meet your criteria of hating each other then loving each other.. but a damn good read never the less.. "The Pact" by Jodi Picoult is a brilliant read, it's about 2 teenage lovers, & it starts of with Emily having been shot & then its all the story of Chris being sent to court over the death, very good read with lots of twists & turns!

what about the naughts and crosses trilogy by malory blackman. It has some very challenging themes in this in as much as it deals with thwarted love/romance due to race hatred issues. It is a teen fiction, but I read it as an adult and enjoyed it.

It is not presented as diary entries, but is narrated in the first person by each character and so each chapter is from the perspective of a single person, but it is not presented in a diary format per-se.

I think you will really enjoy this if you haven't already. Beware though, the books are tragic and very topical in today's climate.

Try My Darling Villain by Lynne Reid Banks. It's all about class differences-she's really posh and he's a cockney wide-boy with a motorbike. i loved it as a teenager and still do in my 30's
