Internet access for 11 YO

we are getting my 11 yo son an internet dongle for xmas so that his PC in his bedroom can be networked to our other PC's in the house.
Even though i consider myself to be an intermediate with PC's and internet, it is all very new to me to have my son have access. He has used our main PC in the living room for many years and i beleive that i can trust him to NOT give out personal details etc, but i just wondered if there was any other advice you could all give me to make sure that his time is spent safely?
We plan to give him a list of 'Dos & Donts' and i have installed K9 on his comp, but wondered if there was any other free parental controls programs that could be used?

I think there is one called Net Nanny that is free.

I have to say that I think it is almost impossible for anyone of eleven to be on their own on the net and not find their way into something or other you would rather they didn't see. I would make sure they do not erase the history or the websites they visit and also be very cautious of chatrooms, there are loads of children chatting away on there to god knows who. Maybe some people might not think you should be 'spying' on your child but I think there is just too much porn and too much going on to leave them unsupervised, as several of my friends have found.

Can I just say, I have been argueing with my 10 year old son about him getting the internet in his room, i have been very against it. I didnt know you could get these kind of programmes! Does anyone know if they work well?
