dyslexia reading fine but difficultly with writing

my son has terrible trouble with writing/spelling at school and is falling a long way behind at school. His reading is fine and he can spell outloud but when it comes to writing the words down they seem to get very muddled. Is it possible to have dyslexia for writing skills but still be ok at reading. I know there are many, many types of dyslexia. I am desperate for answers to this, it is so frustrating for him.

Just a quick question - how is his hand to eye co-ordination generally? Can he catch a ball, for example?

to be honest he cant catch a ball. We were playing on the beach in Spain at half term and it was not good. The school have not been concerned but he has just had his latest SATS results in Year 3 at 8 years old and has been marked as a 1 for spelling and writing which is way below where he should be. Yet his reading is ok with a 2a score. I have just been increasingly concerned as he doesnt want to go to school every morning as literacy is being done, but is fine with maths, science, history and everything else. I have just logged onto www.dyslexia-uk.org and most of the behaviour and writing characteristics ring true. Dont know where to go from here. Something that he said also tonight that he thinks too fast to get it down on paper was also one of the characteristics.

The next step I would take is to go inot the school to speak to his teacher, or the head teacher. Discuss the situation with them and ask for an appointment with the school nurse. You may also want to consider speaking to your doctor about his eye and hand co-ordination.

Three things to do.

Get him an eye test. His problem may be as simple as not being able to see properly.

Make an appointment with his teacher and discuss your concerns.

S/he may have noticed things that you don't pick up on, or may be able to reassure you.

And talk to your GP.

My first thought would not be dyslexia from the little information so far.
Have you considered he may be dyspraxia? Please realise I am only suggesting possibilities!
