We have a new born baby one week old and have just noticed bluish marks on the backs of her hands.

What could this be?

Congratulations!

Is your baby dark skinned? I have read about bluish marks appearing on darker skinned babies, due to pigmentation. These usually disappear over time (maybe a couple of years).

Newborns skin are still quite transparent for a few weeks and lots of different pigmentation marks occur. If you are worried don't feel bad about asking your midwife or health visitor about the marks.
Babies skin is very thin its probably just her viens, talk to your health visitor
Congratulations!!

Thank you for that.
Yes, we are dark skinned / brown (from India) and the blue hue doesn't look like veins.

As long as its OK and will disappear is all we're concerend about.
Congratulations!
Some babies are born with bluespot birth marks and these are more common in dark skinned babies. i guess they can be anywhere on the body, my son had one on the bottom of his back when he was born it was very noticable, but it has now faded a little. But it might be her newborn skin and may go away very soon. You could just call your midwife or mention it to her when you see her if you are worried.
