(he's 7 btw). My mum always said that at least he was sucking the goodness out of it before he spat it out.
I think that he will just get to the point where he thinks "hang on a minute, this is so tasty I am going to swallow it".
I would try cheese chunks that will disolve quite easily and are probably harder to spit out than swallow.
You try giving him nothing but solid food until he ate it if you feel like being hard, but I was always too much of a soft touch for that.
it has been said that there is not a child in the land that won't chew when given a bit of chocolate - I bet he won't spit that out!

People only point out the things that their babies can do that yours can't, I am pretty sure that your son has other qualities that he is ahead of them in - and if if he isn't, its not like starting them any earlier makes you better at them - I mean, once you can walk, that is pretty much it - there is no evidence that being able to walk at 8 months makes you any more athletic or a better walker than someone who learned at 2 and a half.
If it makes you feel any better, my kids are really bright and ahead academically of their classmates, but at 7 and 6 still aren't night trained as far as the toilet is concerned.
So just enjoy your little one while he is little and chill - let him enjoy experimenting with food - I quite often wish I could spit out something that I had eaten - it's much less fattening that way!
