Rash on 7 1/2 month old baby
Hi All
Me and Mr Picky ended up taking baby Picky to A&E on Monday night after he developed a rash on Monday night. It started on the bottom of his legs and quickly spred all up his legs and then onto his tummy and back. It was disappearing with pressure and under the glass (ofcourse my first thought was the dreaded M word..). After 3 doctors had checked his out, they said it was due to an infection he had either in his ear or his tonsils. Anyway, my question is (and one that none of the doctors could answer), why would an upper respitatory tract infection manifest itself like that?? It doesn't make any sense to me! He's lots better now though (but I have never been so scared in my life as I was Monday).
Thanks in advance

Slapped cheek went round here last winter and my toddler had it mildly but my eldest had a really bad fever for so long (about a week) that my doctor actually popped in twice with supplies for us because he knew I was single and couldn't get out. Slapped cheek is quite distinctive though, and starts on the face.... rarely goes to legs. Also the rash is apparent for a long time after the illness has left the body. Every time your kid gets exerted or upset you can see the where the rash was.
My son gets viral rashes when he picks up a bug, they usually appear on his chest and are tiny pin prick spots of pink.
Hes also had fifth (slapped cheek) which looks a lot like measles and starts on the face and neck generally.
Well done for checking with the glass test, always better to check than assume alls OK
I hope baby picky feels better soon

It is very frightening when this happens for the first time, but it is actually very common for kids to get a post viral rash in relation to some other type of infection. It is always better to be safe than sorry, but you may find that this happens again. I think that every new parent I have had contact with in the last few years has done exactly as you have. My two had it at the same time after a cold and fever - I had to take photos - after I knew that they were all right - as they were covered in tiny red spots from top to toe - viewed from a distance they looked like oompa loompa's.
Thanks everso much for all your replies - I really appreciate all the answers. I was so scared though - it was horrible! All the doctors at the hospital were lovely though (Royal Bolton!) and said that I did the right thing taking him in (I would rather take him a million times and look stupid than miss anything serious)
He is much better now and his rash is clearing up nicely - his face was the only place he didn't get it!
Thanks again everyone

Same thing happened to me ,a few times actually with both my daughters...........a doc told me it's good old mother nature alerting you that they are not well. After all the real little ones can't say what's wrong with them. My two used to get a rash up to about age 2 whenever they had a temperature / tonsilitus.
On the fith disease/slapped cheek note my daughter had this in june and it started with temperature ( i have never felt her so hot) and then one side of her face as red as a tomato she lost weight and could barely walk, she slept for almost a week. You done the right thing, I work in hospital and we would rather you came in than miss something. x
