Baby sleeping on its side
10 Answers
Our Son who is 16 weeks, has taken to rolling onto his side at night.
He can't roll over yet and I'm just a worried about what would happen if he did roll over onto his front in the night.
Sorry, I'm a new parent, its probably all normal.

Any device that would prevent this would possibly be dangerous in itself. You could always just turn him back over whenever you see he has got onto his side.Years ago when I had my daughters (they are now 20 and 18) we were advised to lay them on their tummies and they never came to any harm.
My boy was so much happier on his side and i just let him sleep like that. While i was still in hospital the midwives kept telling me off said he had to stay on his back. He also liked sleeping on his tummy and i did put him on it if i was awake. He was always fine on his tummy and i know that when i was a baby i was always put on my tummy to sleep.
I know its hard but try not to worry too much about him rolling over, i think that once they can roll the risk is lower anyway.

my son was the sami i rolled a blanket up behind him and one the other side of him so he couldnt turn back over on to his back or roll on to his front. as long as the blanket is below his tummy so he cant pull it over his face it should be fine. my son is 18 months now and still sleeps on his side. only minus the rolled up blankets.
Hi all of my 5 children slept on their tummy although this was 20 years ago, two of them were in the special baby unit and they were put on their tummy there.
My granddaughter kept going onto her side and she seemed to like the left side, the health visitor noticed that her head started to go flat on the left, (as the bones are so soft), so my daughter ended up putting her on her tummy.
Even if you put him on alternate sides each day to stop his head shape from changing.
You will be fine.

My 6 month old little girl is a tummy sleeper & always has been, she will not sleep on her back, full stop!!!She had good neck control from an early age & neither me or my partner are smokers & she is in a cot next to our bed in a baby sleeping bag.If you are worried keep an eye on him during his mid-day nap & see how he copes when he rolls over, that might set your mind at rest, but I'm sure he will be fine.
Hi, i was in your situ quite a few months ago(1st time mum)but he has always been a restless sleeper and constantly moves around in his cot. top to bottom, bum shifting before he could crawl,I shouldn't worry too much, bless you though, I'm just the same, its so hard when its all new!!

please dont apologise for being a new parent. It is a hard but rewarding learning curve and asking questions is always the best method of learning.
Anyway I used the rolled towel method described above as both my babies hated sleeping dead flat on their back so I propped them at about 45v degrees and all was well. My mum said "well you all slept on your tiummies and are all fine" refering to her 4 children.
I seem to recall the health visitor telling me that if they could roll over under theity own steam then they could roll back and it was ok. If your HV is nice give her a quick call.
