A couple of yrs ago i stupidly had a 1 night stand obviously unprotected in which i became pregnant. I met someone who knew i was pregnant and we decided he would take on the child as his own and we put his name on the birth certificate. The relationship broke up and he became violent ive had no contact with him for a yr and want to take his name off how do i do this.

When he aks how you know, you will have to admit that you provided false information at the initial registration, unless you fork out for a DNA test to prove it. If you go with the story you have told here you could be in trouble.
You need to contact the register office where the child's birth was originally registered:

As Goodsoulette points out, you may have committed an offence by providing false information but registrars are fully aware that the 'father' named on a birth certificate is often not the natural father of the child, so you've probably got no real reason for concern.
