return to work
46 Answers
I know you'll think I am silly but I am due to return to work after maternity leave in May and I am having a really bad time at the thought of leaving my little boy in a nursery. I have no option but to return to work as my husband doesn't earn that much money but I don't know what to do.
My job has gonewith everyone elses in my department and I have got to go for promotion while I am off as my grade no longer exists. I have been able to enjoy my maternity leave at the thought of not just going back to work but having to go for interviews while I'm off and not even knowing what job I am going back to. Please help. x

just because they are in childcare dont mean they get less love

I agree with you ethanryan i do not think those who choose to work and put their children in childcare dont love them. but personally i wouldnt be able to do it, not a baby anyway, i would just miss them too much to bear. and would much rather live with little money and few things and be with them. I also think most parents dont really know what its like in a nursery, some are better than others, but even with good staff (and not all are god) it is impossible for them to be good places for babies. as i said before if you want to work nannies and childminders are much better options.
in answer to your question, only you can decide what is best, if you really want to be with your baby then it will be possible, look into working from home if you can.

Is there any chance that you could get somebody to look after your baby for the odd day and between now and when you return to work full time, spend the odd day at work once your interviews are complete and you know what job you will be doing? Spreak to your HR Department about this. Everybody has a "re-entry" problem when they return to work after a reasonable absence, whether from illness or maternity leave, and part of your anxiety may be about how you get yourself back into the working environment again. Breaking the ice for the odd day or so might lessen your nervousness on this score. I'm sure your anxiety about leaving your baby in a nursery is felt by every new mother who has done this for the first time, but your son will be in good hands and if it's essential for the financial well being of your family that you return to work, don't beat yourself up and feel guilty about it.
thank you for your answer Whoever. I dont have any family apart from my children and husband and my mother in law likes to travel all the time so cant rely on her permanently. Everyone seems to think I am returnng full time which I am not. I will be doing 3 days a week . I am not returning to work until May and once I have looked into the financial situation as currently my bills going out are far more than my income hnce the reason of having (not wanting) to return to work, I might be able to lower the amount of days.
In an ideal world I'd have a very rich husband so I could stay at home and look after my baby, but no-ones life is ideal and having a mortgage etc and living in a town where were one of the worst paid in the south east everything is so expensive, so I have no choice but to go out and earn.

Although i do think a parent should stay at home with their babies and young children i understand that there will be a few people who really do struggle with this. But i really dont understand why people put babies into Nurseries. Apart from anything else they are so expensive, surely that takes most of your income anyway?
Can i ask you why you choose a Nursery instead of a Childminder or Nanny? Also, is working from home not an option for you? Thanks
