This really gets my blood boiling so what should be done about those people who abuse the parent and child parking spaces?

You need the extra width but it doesn't need to be close.
You need the width so that you can open the door fully to get the car seat in without scratching the doors of the other cars.
That said, I don't care if people abuse it, its not law, and its really too petty to get my blood boiling. There are more important things in life to worry about.

it really annoys me too. I have in the past parked in ordinary spaces and once some moron parked so close to me well over the line and I could hardly open the door at all let alone open it enough to fit a toddler in a seat. It is a misconception that people think we moan about these spaces because we are too lazy to walk further, as someone else said it is the width of the space. Especially when you have a baby in one of those baby seats that just clicks into the base in your car, you need to be able to open the car door fully to fit it through not something you can do in a normal space. It also bugs me when parents with children aged 7 or 8 or over park in them too as they are old enough to get in the car themselves just like an adult. OK rant over now
I think that there should be some sort of badging system like there is for disabled people. i.e when you get you child fund voucher you get a label to display in your car (with an expiry date of say 4 or 5 years).
There should then be disabled/parent and child spaces as when we go to town many of the disbaled spaces are often empty ! (i suppose alot of people must get the ring and ride)
If someone is using a space without a ticket then there should be a higher fine like 100 as I think that would put people off.
It really is annoying when you have to squeeze into a space when trying to get a little one out of a car seat. Its even worse when some inconsiderate ....... parks so close that when you come back from shopping you can hardly get back in your own car ! (that also happened to me when I was 7 months pregnant and too fat to manoeuvre I had to get them to call the driver over the tannoy to move it !!! - the shame lol
