Teething pain
Hello every one my friends two month old baby boys gums are getting ready to teeth and its extreamly painful. they have tryed childrens calpol and teething gell for his gums but he is still very very grumpy and as he cant talk we are running out of ideas. HELP!

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.the teething rings etc that you can chill are good, but with him only being 2mnths old, he won't be able to hold them well himself I'd guess. I'd worry that he'd end up swallowing bits of frozen waffle that he melts and gums soft....and apart from the choking hazard, what with gluten/sugar etc all being not recommended foods for such a wee baby, I'd be wary. Talk to your health vsiitor or other new mums.....they might give alternatives. Oh...you could try Ashtons and Parsons teething powders...tho best check the minimum age for those.
Teething is part of growing, unfortunately, there is little that gives the poor little mites any relief - although the previous answers (frozen waffles notwithstanding) seem like excellent ideas. It's just something we as adults have to suffer for them - it's so hard because you can't explain to the little one why his mouth hursts, and that it won't be for ever. Hang in there - it does pass!
Poor little mite. My son has been and still is suffering really bad with his teething, i tried teething gels too and found they were useless! Calpol was a great relief, especially at night, but i can't remember what age you can give it to them from, so make sure he can have it before you try. Another product i tried was a teething powder, i use a Boots own brand powder called Homeopathic Teething Powder. This seems to work on my little man great! They are a bit dear, �3.99 for 24 sachets but i find that it's well worth it, if it works on your baby.

Are you sure it's teething pains. I was sure my daughter was having teething pains when she was around 3 months old - but I was wrong. It was colic. I couldn't buy any gripe mix here in Sweden so I made my own with bicarbonate, fennel tea, aniseed and a tiny bit of sugar. I know that gripe mix is available in UK and USA.
I know a few babies get teeth really early but a close friend of mine in our church is the chief pediatrician at the local hospital, and she said to me that early teething is really the exception and not the rule. Most babies get their first teeth after 6 months - usually around 9 months. My baby cut her first 2 teeth when she was 9 months. She's 15 months and still only has 4 teeth. As I said, I was convinced that my wee baby was teething and I was sure her gums were sore and itchy - but when I gave her gripe mix I discoverd it must have been colic. She settled within 5 minutes.
Sorry to disagree RevShirls, but both my sons cut their 1st teeth by 3months, and the youngest cut 4 at a time!!! (they are 19 and 17 yrs now!!)
doodlebug...I really hope that the little one gets some relief soon and poor mum too, she must be suffering as well!!
As every one says it does pass, but its no fun at the moment. If it suitable to use for his age what about 'Bonjela', as I think it has a slIghtly numbing effect?
thankyou guys these answer have been fantastic. i held him last night and it definatly was not colic i triead to kiss him on the cheek and he screamed very loud. it did'nt help another friend told him he looked like his dad!!!
Any way i shell pass on the imformation you guys have suggested, the mums been up the last few nights with him and is very tired. thankyou once again i am shore this knowledge will be of help to many new parents.

Try the following, which I found helped with my son:
Bonjela
Frozen teethers- the ones that have water in them, put it in the freezer
New Era teething tablets from Holland and Barret - these are herbal, so no side effects. A lot of pple don't know about them, but they are wonderful. About 4.50 for two hundred and something tablets. U give 2 up to every 15 mins, and the tablets dissolve immediately.
I wasn't disagreeing, lindly loo - love your name by the way :) What I was saying is that, although some children cut their teeth early, for the majority of wee ones it is a good bit later. One of my friends wee baby was born with two teeth coming through. It was murder for her to breast feed. Another friend's wee girl had her first tooth at 2 months.
Doodlebug, a lot of the methods mentioned above have been great for my wee one teething. Another suggestion, my Mum used to put Milk of Magnesia on her finger and let us bite on it when we were teething. Apparently it worked really well and was really soothing. I just have to take her word for it as I can't rememeber that far back :)
when my son was 4 months old we tried a rubber teether (the clown face one from Tommee Tippee with the mirror on the back) which he loved, water filled teether chilled in the fridge - not freezer as was too cold, and Nelson's Teetha homeopathic powder. They all worked. Now that he is 2, a few months ago he really liked slices of chilled cucumber.
Poor wee soul. They don't know at that age why they are in pain and poor parents. It really can be an exhausting time when your baby is teething and not all babies respond to it in the same way. Both my daughters cut their first teeth at three months old but my eldest daughter was neither up nor down with it , whereas my youngest daughter was extremely fretful , crying all the time. I always knew when a tooth was coming because of the tell-tale signs - burning red cheeks , constant dribbling , biting at their hands , fretfulness and nappy rash , which they only ever got whilst teething. I found that calpol was good but bonjela was much better because you can rub it directly on to the gums. You only use a tiny amount though and it now comes in a sugar free banana flavour which seems more pleasing to babies than the original flavour which seems very strong , aniseed I think. It's a very testing time for parents but it does pass - although it may seem at the time as if there is no light at the end of the tunnel - and it doees get better. My hubby and I used to take turns of soothing our daughters by cuddling them close and singing to them when they were distressed. You sound like a very caring friend Doodlebug. As long as your friend has plenty of support from either partner/family/friends who can take turns of baby and let mum get a sleep if she is exhausted , she will get through this. Hope this helps x
hi guys thanx i am not a good freind as i only visit once a week and not atall this week as i have a fluiy cold.
my sister is there more often than i she tells me that some of the tricks offered by your answers have helped imensly.i will go and have a look for the chiiller teething rings and banna bonjela they sound like a good idea.

Don't put yourself down Doodlebug - you ARE a caring friend. The fact that you have cared enough to post a question on AB to try and help your friend proves that. Also , even if you do only see your friend once a week , you are giving her a release from baby , where she can enjoy some much needed adult conversation again and she probably looks forward to these visits. It's not really the frequency of the visits that matter I would have thought , rather the fact that she knows that you are there for her to have a laugh with or a right good moan if she feels like it , that'll be a real tonic for her I would imagine - I know that that is exactly how I feel with regards to my own friends who have been invaluable to me in keeping my sanity at such a trying time ! So well done you and I hope that your friend's wee baby gets some relief from all the afore mentioned suggestions x
My friend recommended Ambersol Liquid which as it says is a liquid not a gel so does not slide off your finger while trying to apply. Can purchase from all good chemists and if having trouble sleeping because of teething try Medised which is for teething and colds in children, but helps them to sleep.
