Barium meal for a baby
6 Answers
Hi I posted a little while back about my 4 1/2 month old baby having a narrow duodenum. We've now spoken to the consultant who says she has duodenal stenosis but needs this confirming with a barium meal. Has anyone else had a baby who had one of these?
I've had a little look on the net but I don't know how they're going to fed her the barium? - she's bottle fed at the moment, so will it just be added to one of her feeds? Will I be able to stay with her? How will they keep her still? will there be any kind of after effects from the barium?
TIA k8

I doubt whether she would be uncooperative at four and a half months and I do not see any reason why you would not be able to stay. No harmful effects from the barium will ensue. Don't worry.
So sorry to hear baby bailey needs a barium meal but don't worry. You can give her a feed up to 3 hours before, the procedure which will take about 10 to 15 minutes. A member of staff will hold babies head and arms gently, you will be able to hold her legs and keep her happy, another member of staff will feed the barium which is usually a little thicker than normal milk and sometimes flavoured, either through a large syringe or bottle. If there is any chance you may be pregnant you will not be able to stay. The after effects will be white poo as joko has mentioned and probably lots of windy pops. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
