Babys really cranky, people suggested maybe he just hungry, not saying i agree. My sister said she gave it to hers @ 6 weeks. I didnt think thier insides were mature enough personally. So i was just wondering what everyone else thought. He is breastfed but just seems so unhappy and its been going on for weeks. Every evening screaming, which i think is colic, doctor gave Colief and ive tried gripe water but poor ****** still aint happy.

awww. poor little mite. go back to your GP, it may be reflux.
how is he doing weight wise? is there any indication hes not thriving on the breast and may need more milk?
a baby cannot digest anything other than milk until they are about 4 months old and even then its now advised to wait until 6 months before weaning.
please dont try giving him baby rice or any solids at this age, regardless of what family say.

As the others say , don't give rice or anything else of that consistency hun. As for the colic , how's your milk supply ?
It could be that he's getting it too fast , you could reposition yourself , lie down to feed , to slow the supply a bit.
Have you spoken to your health visitor about his crying after feeds ? x

About 30 years ago, they thought it was alright to put a couple of teaspoons of baby rice cereal in with the bottle to help the baby fill it's tummy so it would sleep through the night. The issue is, the sooner you introduce these things to an infant the higher the chance of it gaining an allergic reaction. They have figured out that if you feed babies things too young, the baby will delelope an allergic reaction to such foods. Another issue is that the baby's stomache is not meant to digest such things properly yet, it can cause tummy aches and issues with bowels. All doctors will tell you no, but older people who have done it with their kids say it is fine. Think about this though, they used to put whiskey on a thimble to rub against the gums when teething. Or put some in a drink to help with sleeping. We all know these things are wrong now, but used to be completely normal. To sum it up no, do not give a baby the rice cereal.
I had loads of probs with my son feeding. I was breast feeding, too. I think because you can't see what they are getting, we usually think they are probably hungry if they cry.
My MIL was the worst for telling me he was hungry, and (not knowing any better) every time he was inconsolable I fed him.
His poo went a bit green, and it turns out that can be a sign of over-feeding too.
I think if he's putting on weight really well, you don't have to worry that he's being under-fed, or is hungry.
Speak to your H/V. Most of them can prescribe carobel or gaviscon for reflux. And will be able to reassure you regarding feeding!!
Hope your wee one is feeling better soon!

I have to say that although recent research suggests strongly against it, we did give 2 of our children baby rice at about 6 weeks some years ago, at a midwife friend's suggestion at the time. Both of those babies were very large birthweight babies however and were hungry all of the time and hey presto it worked, however as all of the very sensible advice above has stated it's really not recommended now and I'd go and see your GP and see what he or she thinks.
You could see if there is a local baby massage course you could go on, as they usually teach a 'colic routine' as well, which is used (separately to the massage) about 1/2 an hour before the colic attach, as colic tends to occur at the same time each day/night, or if not sure when the colic will happen, then use when your baby begins to get niggley. Go to a qualified teacher.
If you have got a local Sure Start Children's Centre near you, they tend to offer courses (4 - 5 weeks) for free, with just the massage oil to pay for (around 2 - 3 for a small bottle) which will last a while.
A friend of mine said that the colic drops from the doctor didn't work for her little one, but after doing the colic routine and baby massage for 4 days made a huge possitive difference to her baby in that he didn't suffer from colic as much and he began to sleep better and was more relaxed. Now after 6 weeks or so he no longer sufers from colic - and still enjoys his massage.

Have to say that I was advised by my midwife 13 years ago to give just a couple of teaspoons of babyrice a day....it solved my problem of a constantly hungry and demanding baby and did my son no harm at all - he has no allergies, is already 5ft6 and as fit as a fiddle! Not saying its right, but was given this advice by a health professional!
I dont think baby rice is a good idea as its rather heavy on baby's tummy, however, i breastfed my daughter and i got an infection and a blocked duct in my breast so feeding became difficult, so i tried to express as much milk as possible and mix it in with a small amount of baby rusk biscuits, i only gave her this once a day as its not good to introduce solids too early. And also not good to give formula to a breastfed baby if you can help it as the may prefer the bottle/formula so it could put an end to breastfeeding. I strongly suggest you try carobel or something similar to help with reflux. My daughter is 7 months old now and unfortunately still suffers with reflux problems which means she doesnt keep anything at all down so is always hungry which means night feeds every 3 hours :( im told this will improve on its own so stick with it, good luck.....
