Me too, my dad was orphaned as his mum and dad died soon after one another, my mums dad died when she was a teenager, I only had my gran, who was senile and didnt often know our names
I was brought up by my grandparents, never knew my Dad and found out later that my sister was my mother.

My grandparents were abroad so didn't see anything of them.....can't say I feel neglected by it. Parents filled me in about them.

I knew all of my grandparents and some of my great granparents. I have wonderful memories from when I was small, but three of my grandparents are still alive so am still making memories!

I guess their influence on your life is the same as anyone else's. I was very lucky, but my husband knew his grandparents and they were pretty twisted alcoholics, and not very nice people. They died by the times he was in his early teens.

Now I have a daughter of my own I am pleased that she has grandparents that adore her and want to have special times with her, but sadly, one of her grandparents is a very selfish person and does not want to be a part of our life because she can't be bothered. She won't visit us and we can't afford to keep making trips to he all the time, she doesn't even pick the phone up to ring or to even send an email, so now I think that it is her loss. I don't want my baby growing up wondering what she had done wrong that her nanny isn't interested in her, so I am focussing on the positives in her life and we will wait until her nan is ready.

As you were growing older, did your grandad seem diddy and your grandma lol!!!
puddicat and weeal...I was told when I was 16 yrs old by my grandmother and at that time I was applying for uni. Was no big deal,as I had other more important things on my mind. My sister was married and had 2children. About 40yrs later. I was told who my father was and he was married but couldn't have children. I rang him one night and he didn't want to know.........no big deal as if someone rang me on a Saturday night saying that I was his son from an affair some 50 yrs ago, I would probably have done the same.
both my parents went out to work so my gran virtually brought me up - she was excellent!! Later on in life if I had any problems I would always go to my gran not my parents. I was very lucky as she lived until I was 39 and my own daughter adored her!!

puddi,,,,thanks, but no big deal, I feel privelidged to have had that upbringing as have many others in my situation.
My Dad's Mum died in 1978....I was 5. Her husband...my beloved Grandad died in 1989 at the age of 83 after being hit by a car crossing the road for some fags (the fags killed him in the end)

My other Grand parents on my Mums side are still alive and I feel very lucky to have them at my age.

I am lucky enough to have my maternal grandparents alive, kicking and living life to the full (although in their 80s). Last year they celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary and it was a fabulous day. Both tell such wonderful stories from a life gone by (although Grandad will not talk about the war - he was at Anzio - but no PTSD, he just came back in 47 and got on with it).

Both are completely bonkers (Grandad's favourite trick is, if he visits a church, is to change the hymn numbers round), both always have time for us (and us them) and both know how to enjoy life.

We have a big family party this weekend (for no particular reason other than the fact we enjoy a good nosh and a good chin wag) and I LOVE those occasions.
