Adding the father's details
It may be possible to re-register the birth to include the father's details and change the child's surname.
This will only be possible if:
* the child's natural parents were not married to each other at the time of the birth and;
* the father's details were not originally registered.
A form is available from the Registration Service and has to be completed by both parents.
Possible ways to re-register the birth:
* Both parents attend the Registration Office - this is the easiest way.
* Either parent must make a statutory declaration acknowledging parentage of the child. This must be witnessed by a solicitor or person legally able to witness an oath.
* Either parent can seek a Court Order naming the father.
The birth will be registered again. Certified copies of the re-registered birth can be purchased from the Registration Officer.
that is the UK civil registration law, however, the child already has a father recorded on the entry and so you should speak to your local registrar of births at the relevent register office to ask how this can be changed, but i think you would need a court order. Just to add, the man who has been recorded as the father must have attended the register office himself to sign as the father if he was not legally married to the mother, that is an importnat point to remember.
