Baby Picky on the Train
Hi all
Me and baby Picky #2 are taking a trip to Norwich from Manchester next week. He's only 7 months and the most chilled out baby ever, so I'm not worried about keeping him amused etc, however, I am a bit worried about what to do if I need to change him. I have spoken to East Midlands trains who run the service and they've said that there are no baby change facilities on their trains due to them being sued once as the changing table wasn't secure. Now he's being weaned, there is noramlly a definate necessity to change him, if you know what I mean, especially as we are travelling over lunchtime and it being a 4 1/2 hour journey. I wouldn't want to do it at our seat as I doubt it will be a pleasant experience for anyone travelling near us and I certainly will not do it on those disgusting toilet floors. What would you do?
Thanks

i got the train from manchester to edinburgh recently. the train did have a changing toilet but i didn't even check it out after i'd used the normal toilet and that was discusting
i changed her just before we were about to get on the train and thankfully there were no smelly ones and we made it to edinburgh without changing her. but we were lucky. if she'd had a dirty i don't know what i'd have done!!
have you mastered changing baby picky on your lap? you could always sit on the toilet and change him that way. i know some of the trains have those big toilets but the train i was on had a tiny one so don't know how easy that would be.

I'm sorry but as another passenger, I think the idea of changing baby Picky on the seat really is quite vile and unfair to others if it's of the more solid variety... It's not like number two smells don't linger!
Having had a similar problem when my sisters were younger and mum was taking us all on the train to penzance (pretty hefty journey for little uns), she would bring a changing mat with her and she actually went in to the corridor by the doors and did it there which I think is fair enough as that's not a seating area. The changing mat also meant that she did not have to expose them to the dirty floor or indeed dirty changing facilities.
I do expect to be shot down in flames by other mothers but I would be furious sitting on a long journey with the smell of baby poo to keep me company.

It would be fair to ask the other passengers if they would like to leave the compartment for just a minute whilst you changed a nappy because there are no changing facilities. I wouldn't object to that. You could then spray the compartment with airfreshener before inviting them back in ;o).
I think it is an appalling that there is nowhere for mothers or babies to go on a long train journey.

It's a direct train (the Liverpool to Norwich service, we're getting on at Manchester), so no, there aren't any changes. 4 1/2 hours is a long time on a train with either p****d off other travellers or a stinky baby. I have tried changing him on my lap but he's now well over 22lb and really long so it's a bit like hard work. I've bought some disposable chane mats and guess I'll have to do it in the vestibule bit if it comes to it which knowing my luck it will...and more than once **sigh**!

don't do what i done. i was on a local flight with my daughter and we were in a seat with a spare seat next to us.
the plane was that small i wasn't even sure if there was a toilet on so i looked in her nappy and saw it was just a wet one. phew i thought. i looked around and as it was a single seater isle on the other side the chap was reading a huge newspaper and couldn't see.
so i lay her on the spare seat and got ready for a quick change. as i was in a total fluster, as it was my first time travelling on a plane alone with her. i pulled out the nappy and to my shock a malteser sized turd flew out.
so my quick nappy change didn't go quite to plan. luckily it wasn't smelly and got her changed and no one noticed.
when i got the train from manchester it wasn't the first stop so it was pinned when i got on and there would've been no where to change my daughter in the isle if needed.
i think if i was a passanger i'd rather you changed it quick rather than baby picky sitting in it for ages and making the carrige smell even worse.
if you take a bag to stick the nappy in straight away then the smell wont be to bad, hopefully you wont have a busy carrige
