Mammogram and Ultrasound Query

My friend has had sore, lumpy breasts for a number of years now and is so used to them being like that has just accepted they are like that and got on with things. After a recent minor nipple problem though on her right breast (which got better with penicillin) the GP, after performing a breast examination, said the breast did feel rather nodular, particularly on the right, and referred her to the breast clinic at the local hospital for further examination . She went for a mammogram on Tuesday and went back to the breast clinic today for the results. The consulant examined her breast then said that the mammogram was 'fine' but then asked her to make an appointment for an ultrasound on her right breast which, out the two, has been the most lumpy, problematic recently. The ultrasound is to take place next Friday. I just wanted to know if anyone can tell me if this is normal procedure - an ultrasound after a mammogram has come back ok? I would imagine now the mammogram has came back normal they have ruled out things such as tumours and now want to check for less serious things like cysts and the like? Any information appreciated.

hi not sure if this will help i always have had pains come and go in my breasts not so much now but i do still have pains. when i was younger it was so bad and i kept saying to my doctor what could i do etc with no luck then i got pregnant and sadly lost it at 12 weeks while i was in hospital my breast were very lumpy and i found a more harder lump the size of a marble i had a scan to see what it was as the scan shows what sort of mass it is licquid or tissue etc (hope you understand that) had to have tests done to check it was needed to be removed by having a needle in my breast to take sample wont lie it realy hurt had lump removed at the age of 17. then for years i was still getting sore boobs and lumpy when this happerned found a doctor who actualy listerned and told me to take evening primrose anything from 3 to 8 when my boobs hurt it worked and its passed i only get it every so often unlike befor it was every month. hope your friend is okay and dont worry they will sort this out

I have lumpy breasts too, probably due to the size and have had a couple of "scares" when lumps were found.

I only ever had ulrasounds though was told that younger breasts can be too dense for things to show up properly on mammograms (or something like that).

I had one of my needle aspirations during an ultrasound too.

As I have small breasts I always have ultrasounds just after the mammogram as I suffered (now on medication 12 days a month) with sore breasts due to cysts. The mammogram shows there are no tumours but as you say the ultrasound will show if there are cysts. Most doctors leave them well alone if they're not very big but will keep a check on them ie needle aspiration. I've also heard evening primrose oil capsules are very good.
