The reviews all mention buying an extra matress but we never did, and my daughter slept and played in it just fine. Really depends how much you want to spend though?!

you only need to worry about the safety issues really, so buying from a reputable company should cover that. otherwise you need to consider the cost and whether it folds flat enough for you to put away/get in the car etc.
