Re- my Mum`s groin pain. While I was away, she was in agony and a doctor came to her house. He moved her leg around and said that he didn`t think the problem was with her hip. He prescribed ibuprofen and co-codamol as he thought it was a strain. He told her to go to the hospital and have an x-ray just in case. We did that yesterday but it takes a week for the results to come through. This morning she phoned me to say she`s had a terrible night so a doctor is going to phone. I think she`s broken something. I don`t think it`s a strain. There are two schools of thought. She had breast cancer so it could be that in her bones and she has been on anti-hormone drugs for 5 years so that could have caused osteoporosis. Hopefully, the doctor might expediate the results of the x-ray as if I take her to A&E, they`ll just x-ray again so they might as well just look at the one they have already done. I`m at a bit of a loss really, and I have to go away to work again tomorrow. Don`t know whether that will happen though.

Mmmm! not sure that i buy the osteoporosis theory and a metastatic spread to he bones is a possibility, but an "outsider" in my opinion.

Difficult.......about your work schedule.

I still feel that my initial thoughts (muscular) remain thew likeliest.

Worst case scenario - cancer
Next worse case scenario - osteoporosis
Best case scenario - muscular.
I sincerely hope you`re right sqad. If you`re right I`ll come over there and kiss you!
It`s all very worrying though.

Nonsense maybe, but common.

When I had my foot x-ray'd I was told it would be 7-10 days for the result to be sent back to the GP who requested it. It was, in fact, quite a bit longer than that.

We got onto the docs and they speeded up the x ray results. It is what I feared - a hairline fracture of the pelvis. I didn`t take the phone call so it`s second hand info but they are going to send someone to take blood tests. I know exactly what that is for (calcium) so I am quite worried. Work have let me use my banked leave so at least I don`t have to face that tonight.

Well, its NOT spread of malignancy........that's a plus.
Yes, the blood tests will be for osteoporosis.........eminently treatable.

How do you know though Sqad? The bones leach calcium into the blood when there is cancer there - that`s was I mean re the blood tests. Do they do blood tests for osteoporosis? I thought that was a bone density test

237SJ....you are correct.....in certain metastatic secondaries in bone, calcium can "leak" into the blood stream but these metastasis do have a unique radiological appearance of bone destruction and appearance..........this would have been mentioned in the X-Ray report.

Yes, osteoporosis is usually diagnosed on a bone density scan but can also be considered on serum calcium levels.

Let me know when the blood results return and if there was any mention on the X-Ray of an osteolytic lesion or if it just mentioned "hairline fracture."

The doctor said that he is going to talk to the orthopedic specialist at the hospital (something along those lines anyway as I only got the info from my mum) to get more info I presume. I`ll let you know. Thanks
