Please, can someone put my mind at rest. My daughter is just over 6 months pregnant. She has been thru an awful lot to get this far she has been told she tested for Strep. I can make the baby very ill but because they are now aware, they can give antibiotics intravenously to her during labour?
It's not uncommon to test positive for group B strep on high vaginal swab, but I can't for the life of me remember the normal protocol in that situation.
Please try not to worry - the Obs will do everything possible to safeguard mum and baby.
There is a support site, if you or your daughter would find it useful until a Doctor comes along, but looks like antibiotics during labour is the standard.
Thank you all. I've tried not to look on web sites as nurse told my daughter not to. I suppose you will always get negative stories. Thank you for support site Mamya. I will show my daughter tonight. Her feet and ankles seem to be swollen all the time too. Strange to me as I never suffered from that.
I understand about searching, sites include all possibilities from mild to most sever but information is good too - at least those caring for her know how to handle things.
I didn't suffer swollen ankles either but many do.
She has Mamya. She had blood works and urine tests. No obvious cause. It doesn't help that she's always doing and not putting her feet up! Just a little sad to see it. She's always been such a little build and was told baby is a big un! So maybe that's got something to do with it!
I assume that she has tested positive for strep from her vagina.
Don't panic.
She will probably be observed and retested again and IF she is still positive then she will be prescribed antibiotics.
NOW.........some Obstetricians will prescribe them now and then retest, others will wait until the onset of labour and when she is "well on" will give antibiotics via a drip. This choice will be made by the doctor in charge.
Even IF she does not have antibiotics than only about less than 1% of the babies will become affected.
Probably a case of watch and wait...........
My daughter was in the same situation, the baby spent a couple of days in the special care baby unit. He is now a cheeky, strapping, healthy 13 year old.
