Inducing Vs C Section

Hi all

I am 37 weeks pregnant and after a recent scan baby is no longer growing.

As such my consultant would like to induce baby sooner rather than later.

During pregnancy I’ve had various issues with large fibroids (blocking the exit) and a low placenta. Scan shows that baby has managed to get past these two issues and should be able to come naturally.

That said we now have the issue of non growth and baby needing to come sooner rather than later.

I’ve done a lot of research online, leaflets, speaking to friends who have had either an induction or a C Section and I personally feel that a C Section is less of a risk and suits the situation better.

All through pregnancy we expected a C Section due to the complications. Our consultant was very open and honest and told me early in the likelihood of natural birth was tiny so I am as prepared as I could be for the surgery and situation.

After reading about induction it seems pretty awful and doesn’t come with guarantee that baby will come naturally anyway.

I’d rather skip the stress for both myself and baby and just go down the original route. In concerned that we try induction, it doesn’t take and I end up in an emergency C Section which to me would be the worst situation.

I wonder what your experiences were? Any advice?

Hi GF. I'm now 37 weeks too and, like you, had been warned all along to expect C-section, mainly due to the baby being in a transverse lie.

However I was scanned again last Friday and baby is now head down and they are no longer planning elective C-section. I admit I was disappointed as I had gotten it into my head it would all be done and dusted with no unexpected complications.

I too gave fibroids but mine are out of the way in the anterior and posterior fundus. The Doc did tell me that natural birth is better in the presence of fibroids.

yes listen to your obstetrician and dont try to second guess him - your doc has delivered more babies than you have talked to expecting ladies. altho you have stated the fibroids and low flying placenta were issues but now are not.

I dont try to tell you how to wash your knickers - why are you planning to tell him how to deliver your baby ?

There is a long long thread knocking around where I give reasoned advice on this ( no Mercy's I think ) which no one read and this one is shorter and to the point - leave it to the ones who know how to deliver babies

thank god - there are some sages-femmes on AB who correctly say that obstetricians deliver babies

I am, in any case, going to have an epidural. This should be useful if I run into problems and have to have a C-section afterall.

37 weeks and your baby is no longer growing ( you don't give an obstetric history...is this you first baby etc?)

You situation is not uncommon due to your placenta "flagging" and getting the baby out is essential.
CS or induction.
Latest scan shows the head engaging.......SO....my advice is to go with the Obstetrician...........Induction and trial of labour.
If all does not go well, the n a CS can be performed.

Everyone - I appreciate the Consultants experience and that he will have done this a thousand times and more. This question was more about ‘what is right for me’ hence wanting personal experiences. That said I appreciate the feedback because at this point I have no idea what is best so thank you

Ah!....first baby......important baby (medically).
How old are you?
I have slightly changed my to C Section.......only slightly.
Difficult decision for your and Obstetrician.
I would still, favour, a "trial of labour"

Remember,a C-Section has complications too....it is not just a scratch on the skin.

Sqad - I’m 34 and had a variety of issues throughout.

No diabetes etc... but regular bleeds which result in my needing Anti D. Plus serious pain pretty much daily for the entire pregnancy which could be fibroid related. I will be asking for the largest fibroid to be removed as it was causing issues before the pregnancy.

This will be the only baby and having had a fair amount of surgery before I know it will not be easy.

the thing is Greedyfly with respect again no one apart from your consultant can say what is right for you.
Their years of experience trumps anything you can get on here from other people who may have had a child or two or worked within 3 foot of a hospital.
Relax enjoy this time and go with your consultant x

Go for the less intrusive induction. C sections for 1st birth often means same procedure for subsequent births.

Thanks all. I will be having another review before a decision is made and I will obviously discuss the situation in detail with the consultant when the tine comes. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly whichever way we go.

Greedyfly.....I can only say this....
I have had two babies...both by c section...the first an emergency.
The second was to be a planned c section but she came early so it was another emergency c section.
If I was now in the position of having my third baby and was being given the advice you are being given I would go with what I felt was the best for me.....and that would a planned c section.

A friend of mine went for C-section for her two - she said it was the best decision she has ever made.
