If he is in a crate, again I would say he has to be used to it first, but have you thought abut a puppy pen which would give him more room and you could leave some paper down in case he needed to go (although an adult probably would not need to if he had been let out before you leave).
I see no problem with them being left for short periods, as you say it is not practical for you to be with them every hour of the day. Provided they get attention when you are there they will probably sleep anyway. I leave my dogs (7 of them!) whilst I go to work. They sleep most of the time I am away, and in the better weather they have access to the garden.
I have a cav too & I try not to leave him more than half a day as lankeela says. I don't know whether it's the same for all cavs but Charlie seems to be able to go for hours without needing to go outside! I've never used a crate, he was an adult when I first had him & was house trained & has never been destructive.
The window cleaner came while I was out last week & normally Charlie goes potty but apparently he never barked once! Some guard dog eh? :o)
i have had three cavi and they were left for about 4-5 hours i only have one now she is left for the same amount of time they were never crated never destrutive and always happy they are wonderful dogs
i might just add they did not have the run of the house when i am not there i do shut them in the kitchen
