First scan jitters - what happens?
8 Answers
I am 11 weeks pregnant and I have my first scan on Friday. Although I am very excited about it I am also a little worried too as I'm not sure what to expect.
I know that it involves having to have a full bladder and some cold jelly but that's about it!
My main concern I think is whether it may involve anything 'internal' or do they just put something over your belly?
I did see my midwife the other day for the first time but with the overload of questions and information I forgot to ask her. So I thought I'd ask you guys.
If someone could just give me an idea of what to expect I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you.

Just lay back and let the midwife do the rest. You will get to see your baby for the first time on the monitor which is amazing!
The midwife will point out to you different things as they may not be obvious at this stage. She will also take measurements to make sure everything is growing as it should be. And dont forget......you get to take the first pics of your baby home with you! :)

Don't be tempted to drink more than they suggest - I made that mistake with the first scan. I felt I should be arriving with a full bladder, but always had to wait 20 minutes or so, which is all the time an extra pint of water needs to go through. I drank more and regretted it!!
It's a magical moment ellegirly - nothing unpleasant at all to worry about. You'll see your growing bump as a a little person from that moment on. You may be able to find out the sex if you're lucky and baby is facing the right way. Both my boys had their legs crossed so we couldn't see!! The very best bit is seeing a little heart beating - still brings a tear to my eye thinking about that - a tiny person with a tiny heart. A whole new being that you created. Well done, you! xxx

Hi all
Thanks so much again for your lovely messages. Well I had the scan and it was pretty amazing I have to say and not at all scary. The baby is looking fine, 2 hands, 2 feet and a healthy heartbeat!
The only thing was my bladder was TOO full! I was so worried about it not being full enough that I went abit over the top, but it was fine, I just had to go and empty half my bladder out as it was pushing down on the baby!
It's all very real now that I've seen my little one bopping around inside me and I just can't wait to be a mum.
Thanks again everyone.xx
