Yes you are allowed to know the sex of the baby at the scan, usually at the 24 week one I believe....

Although I've ready somewhere that experts can tell at the 12 week one too, although I'm not sure how accurate that is....
The 2nd one, where you get asked if you want to know, is usually at 20 weeks.
If they dont ask you, make sure you ask them if you want to know as this will be your last scan all being well.
we have something called baby bond, its near heathrow, but i believe there are other places. you can have the new scans, they can try and tell you the sex and you also get a video of the scan. last time i checked it was about 80, i think. this was just under 5 years ago (blimey it goes quick!!)
It is dependant on the policy of the hospital although i think most will tell you if you ask.
My cousin wanted to know at her scan (in lincolnshire) and was refused.
as missrandom says, you can get a babybond scan (or similar) done for a fee at a private place and even the baby show (see www.thebabyshow.co.uk). The ones at the shows do offers and you can get scans quite cheap but of course you need to be in right date range.
