Diahorea with a 6 week old

I know I havent spelt that right but it seems my 6 year old baby has got it, whoever its spelt! Her stools have never been what I would call solid but we have just had to change her nappy twice in less than half an hour and her nappies were very full and very runny.
I cant ever recall my 7 year old having this so can anyone please suggest anything we can do to help the baby, if anything. She is on formula milk and has been on the same one for about 4 weeks now so I doubt its this causing it. I also know if it keeps on, to seek the advice of the doctor/pharamcist, I was just wondering if theres anything we can do to help her tonight.

awww bless her. The main thing is to make sure she doesnt become dehydrated as they can become dehydrated very quickly at that age. I would phone your health visitor for professional advice but i would think they will tell you to give her cool water (thats been boiled and allowed to cool) and leave off the milk for a while until it settles down. My daughter had it when she was quite young but she was older than 6 weeks and thats the advice I was given at that time. Another tip they gave me to see if a child is dehydrated is to gently pinch the skin on the back of the hand, it should automatically fall back into place once youve pinched it, if it doesnt theyre becoming dehydrated. Another sign is if the fontanel (soft spot on top of skull) becomes sunken.

Thanks lou but unfortunately I wont be able to contact the health visitor til Monday now. She has no other symptoms of being poorly, she is fine herself, her fontanel is still visible and shes feeding as normal. Im happy to give her cooled boiled water to help prevent dehydration but a bit worried about holding back her feeds as she isnt a big eater, at 6 weeks she is only just taking 2-3oz and having 5 feeds during the day and 2 during the night.

I think I will just offer her the water for tonight and see how she goes.

i know it is worrying (((hugs))) i would definitely leave her off it for tonight and see how she goes. I remember being just as worried when my health visitor told me to leave my daughter off her milk and when i voiced my concern she said think about it as if you were poorly with it yourself and someone handed you a plate of beans on toast, it would be the last thing you wanted! and I had to agree! Im sure she'll be fine but if you do get really worried then you know already to phone your doctor xx

and on there its telling you NOT to stop feeds unless theyre vomiting continuously. It also gives you signs to look for. I think you have to do what feels right, you know your baby better than anyone.... its only natural to worry and want to help them xx

are you sure it's the trots and not just runny pooh. If your baby is on formula milk rather than breast feeding they sometimes have runnier pooh. My son now 18 weeks and his pooh was quite runny until I put him on solids. If there are no other symptoms I wouldn't worry to much.

Thanks lou for the link. I have had a read and definately feel less worried for now. I meant I would offer her water as well as keep with her feeds for tonight and see how she went before thiking about stopping feeds. Im glad stopping feeds isnt necessary as, like I said, she isnt a big eater anyway. Plus I wouldnt like to settle her on an empty tummy!

Hi spanner, where did that 18 weeks go? lol How is your little one doing? She has always had quite runny poos but these seem even more runnier and very frequent. Once she had settled on formula milk ( I breast fed her for just over 2 weeks) she would have 1 or 2 dirty nappies a day which Im told by my HV is normal. Tonight we had 3 in less than an hour and that was after having 2 throughout the day.

She seems to be more settled now though and sitting over with dad having her bedtime feed as normal and seems quite content.

Panic over, everything has gone back to normal. Im not sure what had caused it but thankfully it didnt last long and seems to have sorted itself out.

Ive only just got on and see this but Im gso glad shes feeling much better now.

Sounds as if it was just an unexplained thing if she was happy and content in herself.

But should it happen in future then NHS direct are pretty good at answering calls about babies within an hour and are pretty good with the advice. They also keep in touch if needed when a GP or HV is not available.

Hi red, shes definately content now and seems very well. Its almost as if her body was having a clear out ready for upping her intake of milk because since then she has been taking an extra ounce,sometimes more, with every feed. She has gone from having 2-3 oz to 3-4 oz, occassionally 5oz. Which is about right for her age and weight now. So hopefully thats all it was.
