if you are not married and pregnet should you put the fathers name on the birth certificate and would it be best to give the baby the moms lasts name?

i am not married to the father of my too boys and yes his name was on the birth certificate. my boys have got there dads surname, when we decided on that we did have some people say that they should have my name as were not married but i believe that if i gave them my name and then me and there dad married they would have a different name to us both.
also if me and there dad ever split ( hope not ) and i mrried someone else then the children would have a different name to me and there dad.
there dad will always be there dad no matter what happens between us so i believe the children should have the fathers name

you can only put the fathers name on if 1) you are married to him or 2)he is present when you register the birth

Your question suggests that your child is not yet born, so you will be unable to obtain a Birth Certificate at this stage in any event.

However, when the child is born and a Birth Certificate is obtained, unless the father has consented to his name appearing on the Birth Certificate, only your name will be declared as the parent. If at a later stage it is decided that the child should acquire the father's surname this can be done by obtaining a Statutury Declaration made before a Solicitor/Commissioner for Oaths.

i had a friend whose fiance sadly died when she was pregnant and she couldn't put his name on the certificate because he wasn't there, even though he was the only partner she had ever had

It should be pointed out however that you can call the child any surname you like whether you are married or not. Just because you are not married it does not prevent you from giving the child his father's surname even if he doesn't accompany you to the registration ( it just means that the father won't be named on the birth certificate).
So if your name is Sally Smith and his name is Berti Bassett then you could call your child Billy Smith, Billy Bassett or indeed Billy whatever else you like, the choice of name is entirely up to you and is a seperate decision to whether you include the father's name as a named parent.
