baby weight??

ive just had to have a 33 week scan to check the growth and my baby is weighing 5 pound 3. can anyone tell me what the average weight is at this stage in pregnancy?

Isharp, I'm not sure but when I was 37 weeks pregnant my baby was 7lb 1oz. she was born at 41� weeks and weighed in at .... 9lb 7oz!

and I'm tiny!

after 36 weeks a baby will pit on about 0.5lb a week apparently.

dont panic though, the heavier the baby the easier the birth, gravity helps.

plus i know of women told similar things about the weight of baby at scans and gone on to have tiny babies. The scans are not accurate.

One of my sons weighed in at 9lb 2oz and I had to have a caesarian because he was so big!!!!

I remember telling my midwife that the baby measurements worked out to 7lb 1oz at 37 weeks.

she laughed and said, "oh well, if it were 2lb it would still hurt!"

My first was 6lb3oz and was delivered by venteuse and my 8lb8oz son was the proverbial bar of soap. We're not much help are we, if it's your first, it won't be easy - be brave it won't last long in the grand scheme of things. Second time around you have a fanny like a bucket!

I was told my baby wasn't growing and was going to be tiny. She was 7lb 141/2.

well both mine were 9lbs 6 and first was out within 6 hours, second i barely made it to hospital :)

funnygirl, i was hoping not to scare the poor woman.

whats the point in worrying about it, baby has to come out somehow and unless th weight is down to a condition then nature will take its course.

Its not the weight that is usually the issue - it depends on how the baby is lying - i had a section with both of mine, the first was 9lb 13oz, but the reason for the section was that he was lying back to back and then the angle of his head coming down was wrong, so he got stuck solid. This would have happened no matter what size he was. As has been said, it is not likely to be accurate anyway.

my first was 8lb 2ozs and took so long! but with my son i was told he would probably be about 9lb or so at birth. very far of the mark! he was 10lb 10ozs totally natural delivery and im usually only a size 10!

My midwife has never told me an estimated birthweight! I'm also 33 weeks. Are all midwives meant to tell you that at this stage??

no lollyone. They will not tell you. If they are concerned that baby may be a lot larger or smaller than the norm they will refer you for scans.
my first baby was so big (but healthy so no reason other than myself and Mr CRX are tall)i asked midwife hadnt said anything, her reply "if id told you baby was big youd have panicked"

unless there is a medical reason then there is no point in guessing.

Ah thanks red. Just made me think cos sometimes I'm not sure my midwife is 100% attentive. Always seems to be writing when I ask her questions.

My son was 9lb 11oz, home birth and the midwife didn't bring any pain relief with her!!

Similarly to Annie, I was taken down to theatre for a c-section after 32hours of labour because the midwives (and doctors and anyone else who fancied a look up there) were concerned about the size of the baby, and because of her enormous bonce she had gotten slightly stuck. After she was born (naturally, she popped out the right hole by herself in the end LOL) they said they thought she was going to be at least 10lb but she was "only" 8lb 9oz.

I honestly, don't think that the size of the baby has anything to do with the length / intensity of pain. Let's face it, unless you have a baby smaller than an apple it's going to hurt considerably.

I think everyone knows someone who has had frighteningly quick labours, equally frighteningly long labours, early babies, monstrously late babies, huge whopping dumpling babies and tiddly little dolly babies - ultimately, the end result is the same, within minutes you will be gazing in wonderment at your little bundle muttering "I don't know what everyone moans about....".

When I went into labour at 34 weeks with my first child I was scared out of my wits as they were saying that the baby was only going to weigh 2 - 3 lb and would have to go into special care. When I gave birth there must have been about 8 people in the room, some with an incubator ready to whisk my baby away. They took one look at him though and just walked out of the room - he was 5lb 4oz. See - even when I was in labour they didn't know how big the baby was! My second baby was born at 36 weeks and was 5lb 6oz. Going on the weights of my babies at birth I'd say your baby (if the scan is correct!) is spot on!

i actually gave birth when i was 33 +4 weeks and my daughter weighed in at 4.1 and a half.
