My daughter is expecting a baby (due date tomorrow) and i thought it would be nice if i had a present ready to give my grandson (her 6 year old son) and tell him it is from his new brother/sister but would like to get something very appriopriate that he will treasure - does anyone have any suggestions as to what i could get please? thank you.

Also i do have a childs first dictionary that i bought a while ago but he was not ready for it at that stage, now he is learning about verbs, adjectives and nouns, the words are all simply 'labelled' in it, i think i may give him that too.......he does like making things and plays with his lego with his grandad every time he is here (he has lots at his home too) and we have bought him meccano type of things several times which we send home for him to make with his step dad. Thanks for helping me decide!
Totally agree with 2shortplanks- check with mum first. I got my daughter a present when my 2nd was born, it wasn't from the baby though, I figured that she may well be sick of the baby.
How about a day out with the 6yr old to the zoo or similar? A special treat for big kids only, no babies allowed! Mum might appreciate a little 1-2-1 time with the new arrival and you get to create some special memories with the 6 yr old.

If I may tell you my thoughts, then they are that it might be much more appropriate to give the gift not as something from the newborn but in celebration (and maybe commemoration) of the new arrival. Since he is 6 years old, and presumably of at least average intelligence, I would suggest it is inappropriate to tell him the newborn gave anything - about as daft as when people on the telephone to a radio show tell the presenter that their dog upstairs is really excited over having been mentioned on the show. The boy will be totally aware that the newborn is completely helpless. Please treat the boy as you would expect him to be treated by others once he is a few years older, otherwise he is being spoken down to.
Fantastic idea BusyBee, from what you have said about the time he spends with you (similar situation here) i would go for something he will enjoy doing with you, redcrx suggested an airfix model, perhaps there is something that your grandson is into thats similar? I know mine would love to do something like that with me. And congratulations x
When my brother was born, i got given a doll by my parents that told me it was from him. I was only 3 at the time so it was just a simple fun gift to play with, best to get him something he'd like and play with instead of it being kept up on a shelf. If you want him to have something to keep maybe do a book that he can stick photos into of the day his brother/sister is born?
maybe get a tshirt with big bro slogan on it? or a blanket with a slogan on.
as someone said, he will feel a bit left out at first so maybe something that enables him to have an active role too, like a tool for a task to do with the baby perhaps...some nonimportant function he could perform that makes him feel involved...? such as a bottle with his name and title on it, that he can 'hold' for the baby or something...
