Apparently, some royals were visiting the local army camp today so we have been treated to a (very, very low) fly past by a Hercules and a Chinook - we were just getting in the car and they flew right over our heads. Probably not quite as low as it seemed but the kids enjoyed it. Then we had a parachute display with flags attached to ankles and red smoke - all bar one of them went to the left of our house (which is where the camp is) but one poor sod got it completely wrong and landed just over the fence at the end of the cul-de-sac (hate that word - sounds a bit poncey) three doors away. Also got treated to another flight by a Chinook late afternoon (probably when the royals we off home). It's all go here!

I smiled when I realised that a post entitled 'Been busy round here today' had been posted by someone with five young kids. Surely every day must be busy in your house!

Your reference to low-flying aircraft reminds me of when I took a school cricket team on tour from Sheffield to Norfolk. A couple of jets came roaring overhead, incredibly low. (I was brought up in East Anglia, close to several air bases and even I was surprised at just how low they were. You could clearly see the pilots' faces). The batsman (from the local school, who were used to seeing low-flying jets) simply leant on their bats. Our 'tough city kids' in the field all threw themselves onto the ground ;-)

Hi Buenchico - I am seriously not that busy, even been trying to think of some sort of home working I could do to keep me occupied!
It was good today though, not sure what was best, the low flying Herc (which was obviously massive) or the poor bloke landing the other side of the fence! Never seen anyone get it so wrong even when the newbies are training (we see a lot of parachuting around here - there was even a parachute display at the end of term thing at the school and Santa always arrives in a helicopter at the school fair).

It's nearly all helicopters around here. Wattisham air base is just down the road. It used to be an RAF station (with lots of noisy jets) but it's now an army helicopter base. But the RAF still have their major air-sea rescue unit (covering a massive area of Britain's coastline) based there, and the Suffolk Police chopper also operates from the base.

Working in an Army school in Germany, the ankle snappers were very excited because Santa was coming in via parachute. We got them all dressed up in their outdoor clothes and waited at the edge of the field. The helicopter came into view but someone had a "great idea" for a joke, and bundled a dummy out in Santa gear minus his parachute! Total hysterics, by the time the real Santa landed safely, there was no-one to see him. I've often wondered about the interview they must have had with their CO!

I've just Googled to find out that your local army base isn't just any old regiment. It's 22 SAS. If they're involved, I wouldn't just expect Father Christmas to arrive by helicopter; I'd expect him to abseil down the walls of the school, smash his way in through the windows and toss stun grenades into the school hall!

Cc1 - love the humour in that but can see why the little ones were distressed (still funny though).
Buenchico - its really weird around here, obviously you get to know who are and who aren't 'regiment' (they have ways of standing out). Went to a firework night at the camp and it was ace - brilliant fireworks, cheap but really well done BBQ and they parachuted covered in absolutely loads of glo sticks, excellent!
