dieting book for 6yr old
7 Answers
Due out in October."Maggie goes on a Diet",is aimed at 6-12 yr olds
They say, never judge a book by its cover but, this book, somewhat
unsettlingly,depicts Maggie as dumpy,pig-tailed,wearing unflattering
clothes, looking in the mirror at a thinner self holding up a tiny pink
dress.
Sounds bizarre, but has obesity in children become such a problem
that parents have to resort to "shock tactics" ?

I think the cover of the book is unfortunate and why the book is aimed at children I don't know. I would be all for a book aimed at the parents though with some easy practical ideas. It is obviously not the kids fault and I think the obesity problem is more complex than just what the kids are eating, it's a social thing to do with lack of exercise, more tv/computer games, social reasons where people don't let their kids out to play etc etc.
I am not condoning the fact that some parents let their kids eat crap and far too big portions, i just think that maybe some of them get sucked into the problem and then it becomes very difficult to reverse it. e.g. Overweight child doesn't want to exercise because it is hard work to run when you are overweight - they then have more time on their hands so eat more.

Two of my children have been 'monitored' as part of a county scheme - boy #1 is verging on under weight (year 6) and girl #1 (reception) is verging on overweight (according to the BMI thing). If they had sent a letter home advising me on how to rectify either of these things I would have gone ballistic. He is not skinny (just needs to grow into his body) and she is not fat (just solid). I am not being idealistic here, if there was an issue I would deal with it myself. My children just have different builds.
I so agree with you sherrardk.
The son-and-heir was overweight according to the BMI thing and we were harassed by the school nurse.
Needless to say he is not overweight now (fully grown adult, mid-twenties), they were just measuring him at the wrong age.....
I think that book is irresponsible. Have the publishers not heard of anorexia nervosa ?
I bet more people have died of anorexia than obesity.
