Researching Family Tree

I would like to start tracing my family tree but have no idea where to begin. There are so many websites but which are the best? How much does it cost? Has anyone out there done this and if so what advice can you give me? I know my grandmother's full name and date of birth and that she lived in Birmingham, but that's about it! What are my chances?

Your first port of call is all your living relatives....you never know what they know. Any info gleaned can then be used to take you on your search. personally I use genes reunited, about a tenner a year, and you never know, some of your relatives may already be on there and you can link to them.

Ancestory.com was good for me

I did join Ancestory.com and it cost around £12.00 approx per month. It was useful but to be honest, unless you have relevant dates etc, you are limited to what you find out. Perhaps others have had a different experience.

There is a genealogy section on answerbank - it's under history. Lots of helpful people in there if you need more help.

To start though, ask any relatives (especially ones a generation or two older than yourself). They may know quite a lot about your family, and may even have birth/marriage/death certificates you can copy, and maybe photos you could copy aswell. Once you've done that work backwards from what you know. I know that ordering certificates can be quite expensive, but you can glean a lot of information from them. On my fathers side I started with my fathers birth certificate, then got his parents marriage certificate (which gave me both their fathers names), then their birth certificates etc etc. Once you get back to 1911 and before you can check the census. I use findmypast.co.uk and I'm also on genesreunited where I have found a few cousins (one a first cousin I've not seen in 30 years, the others a little more distant).
