i am wanting to work out my family tree,is anyone else doing this that can put me in the right direction and the best site to use,any hints or tips,this is my new hobby instead of watching telly all the time,thank you.

ancestry.co.uk and findmypast.com are both good sites for information, the best info comes from family members, even better if they have pics.

geneology is both frustrating and wonderful at the same time :)

Our local library has a lot of old records where you can look up old census forms, if yours has something similar have a look there. If I remember rightly you're in Scotland so take a look at the Scotland's People site where they have all the census stuff as well - sadly that costs. For £10 you can access the records about 5 times (not sure exactly how many times you get for the tenner it's been a while since I looked) It might be best to start asking questions within your immediate family as a starting point though starting with your parents/grandparents and so on and working back from there. When I started years ago I talked to all my relatives, especially the older ones, while they were still with us!
You will be surprised how much they will be able to tell you and they really enjoyed reminiscing over a cuppa.
BEWARE it is very very addictive! But very satisfying!

I know this sounds simple but start by writing down all you know - date of birth, marriage and death of everyone.Then ask other family members what they know - they'll love the chat! Aim to get all your great-grandparents first. good luck, enjoy!

Have a look at FamilySearch.org it is a free site put together by the Mormon Church. I have found a lot of my early relatives on there. Other sites such as Ancestry and Genes Reunited you will have to pay. Your local library have computers where you can access Ancestry.com for free, as long as you have an idea of who you are looking for you can stay at the Library for a couple of hours for nothing. Church records and transcripts are sometimes put on-line I have found an excellent site giving details of the village in Leicestershire where my ancestors lived for around 200 years. Put your queries on here under Topics - History- Geneaology. There are some super people who are willing to help there.

Mrs MM started this a couple of years ago. Turned out a lot of suicide on her Grand parents side. She gave up as it really upset her. So be careful what you want. The results may not be what you want to hear.

apparantly on my grandpa's side they owned a lot of land in scotland,a freehold,looking forward to this,my sister is phoning me tomorrow with a lot of details and dates then i will get started.
