More modern records

I read this section to look for tips on extending my family tree past my maternal/paternal grandparents but don't hold out much hope as I am struggling with even my parents siblings in respect of births deaths and marriages. It doesn't help that they both come from relatively large families (5 or 6 siblings each)

I realise that the 1911 census is available but wonder what. if anything. is online for events AFTER this.

Births in the 1912 - 1920 period? (Looking for 1 or 2 there) or marriages around WW2 and if truth be told I am even looking for my own birth entry!!

I've tried all the usual suspects but wonder if, for example, any electoral rolls are available?

The GRO seems to be the obvious place to look:

Otherwise you'll probably need to consult the records of the relevant County Record Offices (for such things as archived electoral rolls).

do you know where there are family graves that may have inscriptions which may help

also, historical electoral rolls are not easy to search unless you have addresses, but they are kept in your local reference library usually in bound form. you should also check out your local family history group to see what local sources may help that they have already done, like graveyard surveys etc. some register offices now allow a search of their old registers for a fee, this may be of use, but expensive.

Definitely try GRO as Buenchico suggests. If you haven't done so already, you could start by doing a free search at Free BMD:

And then if you find a likely birth, death or marriage, send off for a certificate from GRO.

Do you mind me asking what town or region you are looking at? There are quite a few local genealogy groups that have really good resources and transcriptions of parish registers.

after 1911 the mothers maiden name is shown in the civil registration birth index which should make it easier for you to identify the right people, the districts are also listed which can help eliminate other entries. marriages in the index link up to the spouse which also helps, have you not tried the 14 day free trial on ancestry.co.uk, you could get alot done on there in 14 days especially with support on here. you can also use your local library to look at ancestry library edition for free which will also be useful for births deaths and marriages up to the 1980s in some indexes.

Thank you for all your answers guys (and gals).

To answer some of the points raised - my main areas are in Wycombe in Bucks and also Trimdon/Wingate area in Cleveland.

I have done all on BMD and cannot find what I want there. As an example I can find the marriage of an aunt but not her birth. I can however find births for her siblings!

Looking at the electoral roles in these places will be a problem as I now live on the south coast.

I will make enquiries at the local library about looking at the ancestry online there.

not sure how much info you'd like to share, but there's some very helpful people on here. If you want to put up 1 or 2 relatives details and any info you have for them (date or place of birth) I'm sure a few of us will have a search for you, if you wish.

In the Wycombe (Bucks) area I am looking for 2 births. Maternal aunt is Clarice HORSEMAN born about 1914 +/- 2 years. From a 1942 marriage I believe she might be Florence C. Her mothers maiden name is GRAY.

[Not really in the time of my original post but in the same area the same aunts (and my own mothers) father was, I believe, Frank Horseman - might have more initials - who married Florence Daisy GRAY in Dec Qtr 1912.]

puternut you should be fine with the ancestry library edition but some libraries have not upgraded their version due to finances therefore some editions available in local libraries are the older editions with bmd's up to the 1980s only.

There is only 1 Frank Horseman in Wycombe in 1911. Looking at Mr Beal's age I would suggest all the Horseman boys are his stepsons...............

Hmm I have rechecked your 1914 data on FreeBMD and the Horsman doesnt appear on there!! Can I ask where you got this from?

As regards all the rest - especially finding Frank in the 1911 census - was indeed above and beyond. Thank you.

Seems Mrs Beal did bring her children with her (all 5) and then had 4 more with Mr Beal and then still had room for a visitor. Do you have their address in Wycombe by any chance?

It is possible Herbert was a relation of my grandmothers as he is in fact only 5 years older than her.

I have also noted how William and William George seems to crop up over these familes with Frank even naming his son Frank WG in 1940?

The 1914 birth record for Florence was from ancestry.co.uk and today I've confirmed it on the genealogist.co.uk who have the correct spelling Horseman. Registered in Wycombe 1914 Q2 vol 3a page 1936.
The address for Frank in 1911 was 82 Desborough Road High Wycombe. (There were only 6 Frank Horseman's in the entire country in the 1911 census)

According to the 1911 census Mrs Beal had 11 children, 8 of them still living, so there's 1 more than showing on that census return.
