My husband has been of work sick and is unable to return to work. Do his employers have to pay him anything if they are unable to find him a different position in the company and terminate his employment?

depends on the company and depends on his contract.

usually linked to pensions...being deemed unfit for his job or any other in the future. he will get his pension early and a lump sum. that's the most likely scenario - check his contract and the work's sickness policy....all will be explained.

in the normal course of things no. They could terminate his employment on capability grounds.

I don't think so - in the past I've worked in places where people have been declared fit for light duties only, but if there aren't any light duties, the company doesn't have to create them. We'd go through the capability processes and then if the person isn't fit for the job they are employed in, they'd leave on medical grounds. There wouldn't be any compensation.
