Places to go to in January

It's my sons 21st birthday in Jan and he's not one for parties but has asked that he, hubby and I go somewhere together for a couple of nights. Now going abroad might be a nice idea or even somewhere special in England.

Anyone got any suggestions? We went to London with him for his 18th and he loved it but it would be nice if we could go somewhere else. Don't want to spend too much.

If you`re going to go abroad you need to go somewhere that does winter well. Prague, Budapest, Copenhagen, Saltzberg, Vienna should be good for a couple of nights.

Oh. Well, I suppose you're going to be staying in the UK. Given the time of year, maybe try Cornwall...

That is so nice that he wants to spend his 21st with his parents ;-) Edinburgh is a fantastic place if you want to go to a city but it depends where you are in the UK as to what would be the most value.

Yeah - that's great. My first thought was Cornwall as I love the place and he's never been there. York was also on my list. This has go me thinking!!

We went to Amsterdam in January one year and really enjoyed it.

Good museums, reasonably priced food, nice canal trip in a warm covered boat, beautiful dutch architecture and of course a good laugh at the red light district. We also had time for a half day trip to the windmills and a Dutch cheese maker. I'd recommend it.

We are in North West England so near to Manchester airport and we have a car as well. Never been to Edinburgh which sounds really interesting. Going to do some searching for prices, etc.

I hate to say this but coming from the South West, I wouldn`t go to Cornwall in January if I were you. Not unless you want to be somewhere where everything is closed, it`s blowing a gale and pouring with rain.

i know most people book their own stuff nowadays, but i don't think you can beat going into a travel agents and sitting down telling them you price range and letting them give you ideas

Go and stay in a lodge/log cabin in Cornwall.
Check out http://www.hoseasons.co.uk/lodges/ as they have loads on there. You can go either Monday-Friday or Friday-Monday and you could get one with a hot tub, well within that £500 price range.

Prague is lovely and good for winter though the budget may well be too tight. Budapest is great too though it's a lot bigger than many cities you can walk around easily enough (Prague, Amsterdam etc...). We did a day trip to Vienna from there but you'd need more than a couple of nights and bigger budget.

Edinburgh could be good and I like Dave's suggestion of Burns Night related.

That's why I mentioned the lodges. They have log burning stoves, outdoor sunken hot tubs and plenty of room in the fridge for a few bottles of wine.
It's a lovely thing to do as a couple, but I suppose someone of 21 might enjoy it too.
If you are intending on going to Cornwall, then I wouldn't really plan to do much outdoors! :-)
