Since I eventually updated to 8.1 I've had problems with this site, among others. After 30 seconds or so it defaults to another site, obviously an advertising site. At first, I thought I'd touch one of the irritating ads but it happens everytime. Anyone else had a similar problem? It's not the ISP as this old laptop is on the same one, good old Vista.

i had no problems after 8.1 update..install adbloc and run free malware !
Unless your copy of 8.1 is an illegal one it has nothing to do with any site redirection. You have probably picked up some malware and need to download and install Malwarebytes anti-malware (free not trial version).
Also make sure you have a decent anti-virus program installed (Avast is free and decent).
It's a browser hijack. Download, install and run the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/products/
(As Daffy says, take care to deselect the option to take a free trial of the Premium version. Don't be surprised if a scan takes ages - that's normal. If malware is found use the 'quarantine option').

[Stop press: I've just looked back through your past questions and realised that you should already have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, so you already know about it!].

Then also run a full scan with your anti-virus software.

Then go to your list of installed programs and check that nothing has been installed there (other than by you) recently. If there's something suspicious there, uninstall it.

Then look through the list of any browser extensions which you might have. Delete anything that shouldn't be there. Note down the names of any extensions that you want to keep. Reset your browser. Reinstall the extensions that you require.
[That paragraph probably won't apply if you're simply using Internet Explorer in its default state. It mainly applies to Firefox & Chrome].

Thanks for your replies, I have run the malware program and there are no threats detected, I have full Norton security so it looks like I'll have to give my man a call!
Meanwhile why not try an on-line virus check to give a second opinion ?

Kaspersky do one. I've used Trendmicro Housecall on occasion too.

Sure sounds like an infection to me.
