Is Referring Your Parents As "you Guys" Considered Rude Or Disrespectful?
23 Answers
My parents went bat *** crazy when i asked them if my little sister could sleep with you guys. I said it with a friendly tone but my dad got very angry about it. So i was just wondering if this is really rude, and what i can use instead of "you guys". I am born and raised in australia and my parents are from south east asia. Are any other parents offended by this language?

The parents are from SE Asia so might expect more of a show of respect.

Well clearly it offends your Dad and top marks to you for considering his feelings on this. Personally it wouldn't worry me but both my (adult) children still call me by my pet name so it's not an issue with us. What about Mom & Dad, Pops ? what did you call him when you were younger? Maybe speak to him about it and see what he would like to bve called. Must say that there are many parents out there who would love their children to be speaking to them and they wouldn't bother what they were called just as long as they were contacted.
My middle daughter refers to us as 'you guys' on occasion, but she is thirty-eight.
If she had said it when she was thirty years younger, I would have suggested that it was a little unsuitable, although I would not have been offended - but guiding children about appropriate behaviour as they grow up is an important part of parenting.
You don't say how old you are, but it does appear that your parents were upset - and that may be down to cultural concepts of respect.
What is rude to one parent may not be to another, but the only parents whose opinions matter the most to you are your own - so take their reaction on advisement, and know not to say it again.

- Thank you all for the answers! Trying to avoid "you guys" yay! I'm just really used to using it.
- My little sister started sleeping with me because she doesnt have a room and used to sleep with my mum (dad just came back from overseas, he's been there a couple of years).
- I can't use "you" instead of "you guys" because both parents were present. So the q was "can 'angel' sleep with you guys?" Wont mention the reason because it's not important and for my little sister's sake.
- My mum doesn't seem to mind when my siblings and i use it so when my dad came back i was surprised.
- does my age matter? I'm 19 :) guess i should have known better. Woops
- THANKS AGAIN I really appreciate your time and input (I'm new to this, didn't think anyone would answer)

- I use "you guys" often its just what i say when i talk to 2 people (something i grew up saying often, so a bad habit now). I probably don't use mum and dad because you guys just comes out of my mouth. And mum and dad is longer. Guess I'm just lazy LOL. But thanks i will keep that in mind for next time.
- and i totally agree never too late to learn something new. I'm still young there is so much i do not know and so much to learn .
