Then they hit upon the idea of having tie-ins to Disney, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Spiderman, et al. It costs them mega-bucks to use those brand names, with those costs being passed on to customers.
Lego are a Commercial Company, and their aim is to make as much money as possible from their products, not charge a fair price.
The market dictates the price, and that is high because lego is a Premium product, and people will pay more for it because it is superior to other toys. (And I would suspect the parents love it as much as their children, so will pay the price).
It is the worlds biggest toy company with turnover of US$2.1 billion.

If you just buy the mixed bricks sets, they are a reasonable price. It is only when you buy the specialist sets like Harry Potter, Star Wars etc that it starts to get very expensive and that is a lot to do with the merchandising of the movies.. everything with that movie on it costs more. My nephew is in to Lego and I just buy him the mixed sets which he will play with longer than the specialized sets anyway
