Bednobs I see you were asking about dogs in rescue centres. Does this help? They have Terrier Rescue, Staffie Rescue, plus other breed categories. You don't pick the dog, they do, which is how it should be. They choose one to suit your lifestyle as their priority is the dog. If you want to pick your own dog then this rescue is not for you. I've fostered for them and also adopted two smashing little JRT's. I have to say they chose well for me.

I read, only minutes ago, that there is a massive increase in the numbers of unwanted cats and kittens at present. It is a situation that is easier to prevent than to cure.

Benobs - I wish you well in adopting a dog. If I decided to get a dog I would get a puppy. This would be my third dog. Alas, Frankie is not a brave or outgoing cat and I think that he would be freaked out by any dog.

I do fear that after everyone goes back to work properly, many recently aquired dogs will end up at the centres when people realise they dont have enough time now.

They're not all terriers, Bednobs. They have other dogs too.

My daughter mentioned Battersea as she's in London. Such a large organization, but virtually no animals available. Either dogs or cats. Where are they all?

I have kept an eye and noticed this too. Over the last couple of years, the numbers have gone done hugely. Which is great, until you want one yourself. More and more people are getting theirs neutered and not breeding them, but also, many wanting "rescue" dogs are looking abroad now, as there are far fewer here. Particularly if you need one with small children or other dogs.
There are free sites, like Preloved or gumtree, where you can get an older dog just before it ends up in a shelter, but you have to be quick.

I've looked on gum tree and a few other similar sites. Lots of pedigree pups going for silly money...£1000-4500!!
Even the few deemed as rescues are in the 350-400 range. Charities charge less even with overheads.
Even kittens of no particular pedigree are 150, though the local pet shop told me that's so they don't get acquired to be used as 'bait'...shudder

I suspect there will be a lot of unsuitable people wanting her and she will be quite difficult to place. She's obviously very high maintenance and possibly better as a working dog.
Bednobs if you think your lifestyle would fit in with hers. fill in the extensive form to apply for her and see how you go. She's certainly beautiful.

a lot of the rescue centres had to shut up shop temporarily due to the virus - most of the dogs were fostered out with only those unable to go into foster care remaining at the centres - hopefully there will be many 'failed fosterers' who took on these dogs.

There do seem to be, RSVP. It's also worth bearing in mind though, that as pasta says, dogs are going for stupid money just now. Any age, breed, etc... and there are so many online sites where you can advertise free. Even the most horrible owners are likely to want to make a couple of grand, if they can... so you do need to consider that by the time they are "given away" to a charity, there could be some reason they were "unsellable". There will be some genuine reasons, but many won't be any more, it has all changed so much.

One of the rescues by me currently shows 22 dogs...9 are greyhounds. The rest...ranging from JRs to Border collies, Labradors that were breeders, and other medium breeds have the following issues...
Guarding behaviour...very common and unsuitable for families with young children
Extremely nervous
Under socialised
Fear of men
Agression
Needs to be muzzled around other dogs
Doesn't like to be handled

You'd need to be brave to take on most of them.
