Being in your 40’s is an odd age, especially if you don’t have kids

I want to feel young, dress youthful, run, learn, play in the sea and be adventurous but feel I am too old. I have missed the opportunity to succeed in sport, there are only veteran competitions which don’t fill me with excitement. You can’t full hang out with friends your age because they have families.

Yet I am not old enough to slow down and retire on my goals

Don’t you think the 40’s is an awkward age?

I don't remember.
40 can be a fabulous age, no reason why you can't do all of those things, you certainly shouldn't be dressing like your grandma probably did.

Do a couch to 5k and join in the fun runs; do a degree in something that truly fascinates you (plenty of part time degrees to choose from); do a long distance walk; join a climbing group or a wild swimming group.
You have health, energy, vim - go grab life and give it a darned good shake.

An awkward age can be any age. You are as young or as old as you feel. Volunteer, go to you local kennel, they always need help, or to your community centre, hospital, hospice or library they could help
Try the sports, I started rowing at 40 and still enjoy it 35 years later. It's also a great social activity. Rowing may not be for you but try others.
If you have a local parkrun, try that. Ours is very friendly and welcoming.
Canoeing is a fun pastime.
go out and enjoy yourself

I got Cancer aged 47 - and it was like a curtain coming down ( falling off a cliff - you get it) mid-performance.
( colon, 20 y ago but it was still ahelluva shift)
Not at all, but then I went paddling in the big fountain in Birmingham city centre in my 60s, you don't stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing. 40 something is great, old enough to know better but young enough to do it anyway. Wait until you get to your sixties, you suddenly realise time is short.... Better do stuff while you can.
