Because looming over a child is intimidating and unfriendly.
Because it puts the adult on eye level with the child.

The essence of communication is reading facial expressions, and the child needs to see the adult's face to be able to do that.

Workno - What I mean is, if the eyes of the adult and the child are level, the child can read the adult's facial expressions, and vice versa.

I've always been told by Nursery and school tutors that getting down to the child's level encourages better communication.
