Chairs for newborns?

This might seem like a silly question, but baby is due in 7 weeks and I've no idea what they sit in when they're newborns. Do they lie down all day in bed/moses basket or can you get chairs suitable for newborns? I've heard you have to be careful regarding supporting their head/neck and those bouncing chair things just don't look sturdy enough - and they're also very low to the ground, which worries me when we've a cat and a draughty cat flap .

Well all of our eight children have sat in those "bouncing chair things" with cats and dogs and older kids all milling about and have never come to grief, but you'll have to find something that you yourself are happy with or you'll never have a moments peace. Certainly a crib/moses basket/carrycot is fine until they are afew weeks old and get bored not being able to see much:)

Both my kids sat in the bouncy chair things..and have turned out fairly normal ;oP had a cat with my oldest child and aslong as you keep and eye on the cat shouldn't be a problem.

With my daughter we brought this which i thought was quite good but a bit expensive ( turns out thats what grandparents are for!)

My son was quite happy to lie in his moses basket sleeping all day when he was just born but from about 6wks he started staying up a bit more through the day so I started putting him in his bouncy chair (which is fine with cats/dogs as I have a big Alsation who doesnt bother him)or his play mat/gym and that keeps him happy.He is now 11wks old and is already growing out of his bouncy chair and is trying to pull his head up so if you use a chair always watch your baby incase they tip themselves out of it.

My kids loved sleeping in their pram, after a walk. I'd just bring it into the hall. Car seats are good too. As long as they are comfy they will be fine and safe. The bouncy chairs are great too.

Do a favour to your newborn please though - put him/her in comfy all -in- ones, not the trendy jeans/skirt and t-shirt combo I keep seeing. Babies lie down lots and it's much nicer for them. It doesn't matter what a baby wears, as long as it's clean and keeps baby warm then it's fine.

I agree wee-angel I was merely suggesting some of the newborn clothes around are not great if the baby cannot sit up.

Another idea clairelb is a harness - my kids loved being carried around in these when they were tiny. Great if you fancy a walk.

If you have bought a travel system then the baby carrier/car seat is ideal for putting them in, indoors aswell as out. My daughter was in her moses basket almost permanently for the first few weeks then i used the carrier. was ideal and didnt need to disturb her too much if she was asleep and we wanted to go out. when your baby gets to about 10-12 weeks buy a bumbo (google it) fantastic I recommend to everyone who is pregnant:-)

We had a Graco electronic rocking swing which was great (although a bit expensive �70ish) and even better for our second as it kept my baby out of harms way (I caught my 2 year old trying to get in the Moses basket on top of her to give her a cuddle!) which might be a good thing if you're trying to keep the baby away from the cat. Most of them have a few speeds and lay back so that they're suitable from birth or very soon after. Absolutely ideal if they get overtired and you can't get them to sleep too, as the rocking motion does the trick! Most babies are happy in a Moses basket initially and certainly we used the bouncy chair with both children - they're great because they're so portable as well. The more expensive ones have really good support for the head/neck area - have a look on www.graco.co.uk as they have both types (I don't work for Graco, promise!) - I'm sure there are lots of others too but my experience has been with these products!

Newborns should stay lying down! (Most of them sleep loads anyway) I always found bouncer chairs a waste of time, as you'd only use them for a few weeks before baby can tip himself over. If you want to give him a change of scene or posture try creating a slope that will fully support his back and neck, by tucking a blanket under the crib mattress and another tucked around to stop him slipping.

just don't leave your baby with all his weight on his bottom/tailbone for very long at a time. Also my carseat recommends a 2-hour limit for 1-year olds and less for younger babies.
