Try to find a Family centre run by the Mormons. The are really helpful and have loads of research stuff. they also have a web site. You can get most censuses on line. prior to 1901.
The 1881 census is free at www.familysearch.org but for most of the others, they are all on subscription sites.

Your local Records Office or Archives will have all the censuses for their particular area on CD which are free to search.

The 1901 and 1881 census are both free on www.ancestry.co.uk

Have you also registered with www.genesreunited.co.uk

I have found three distant cousins in the last month using genesreunited. One of them has traced one line of my family tree back to 1692!
Oh - just thought, have you asked any relative you have (Aunts, Uncles, Cousins etc). Some of them may know what you're trying to find out, they may also have birth/marriage/death certificates, grave papers and/or family photographs. If you're lucky there may be a family bible. Even though I have been tracing my family tree for a while now it was only two months ago that a cousin send me a grave paper of a family grave I didn't know existed. It was only then I found out that my grandfather had two siblings that I didn't know about.
